Stanley Nwabali’s fairytale return to Chippa United gathered even more momentum on Saturday as the Super Eagles goalkeeper delivered a commanding Man of the Match performance to help the Chilli Boys secure a valuable 0-0 draw against Golden Arrows in their opening fixture of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season.
Just weeks after rejoining the South African side following a five-month absence, the 30-year-old produced the kind of display that reminded everyone why Chippa United fought to bring him back.
Making his first competitive club appearance in eight months, Nwabali was virtually unbeatable at the King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium, frustrating Golden Arrows with a string of outstanding saves to preserve a clean sheet.
According to FotMob, the Nigerian finished with a match-high rating of 9.1, underlining his influence on a contest in which Chippa spent long periods under pressure.
The former Enyimba goalkeeper made six saves, including a superb double stop shortly before the hour mark to deny Ronaldo Van Neel, while also dominating his penalty area with three high claims, three clearances and 12 ball recoveries.
Although his passing accuracy of 65 per cent highlighted an area that could still improve, his shot-stopping, command of the defence and vocal leadership ensured Chippa left Durban with a hard-earned point.
Another statement after emotional return
Nwabali’s latest performance continues an impressive resurgence since returning to the club in July.
His comeback was initially met with mixed reactions after he walked away from Chippa United earlier this year hoping to secure a bigger move following his exploits with Nigeria.
That transfer never materialised, leading to criticism from some supporters after he chose to return to the Eastern Cape club.
However, the goalkeeper has responded in the best possible way.
He kept a clean sheet on his unofficial return during pre-season, then produced the decisive penalty save as Chippa United lifted the Eastern Cape Pre-Season Tournament, earning glowing praise from head coach Brandon Truter, who described him as “one of Africa’s best”.
Saturday’s Man of the Match display now speaks of another powerful response from a goalkeeper determined to prove he still belongs among the continent’s elite.

The performance could also have significant implications beyond club football.
Nwabali emerged as Nigeria’s first choice goalkeeper following his outstanding performances at the Africa Cup of Nations, but lost momentum after leaving Chippa United and spending several months without competitive football.
During that period, Maduka Okoye strengthened his claim to the Super Eagles’ number one shirt.
Now back playing regularly and producing standout performances, Nwabali has sent an early message to Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle that he is once again ready to compete for a place between the posts.
