Stanley Nwabali is back with the Super Eagles, and if his latest social media post is anything to go by, the Chippa United goalkeeper has returned with the same swagger that has often made him one of Nigeria’s most talked about players.
The 30-year-old marked his return to Eric Chelle’s squad by posting a video from Nigeria’s bronze medal victory over Egypt at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, featuring his penalty saves from Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush.
His caption was short, playful and typically cryptic.
“I’m back, it’s time to keep crying 😂.”
Who exactly Nwabali was addressing remains unclear but given everything that has happened since his memorable night in Casablanca, the timing of the message makes it an intriguing one.

Nwabali finished AFCON 2025 as one of Nigeria’s standout figures after producing a decisive performance against Egypt.
With the bronze medal at stake, the goalkeeper saved penalties from Salah and Marmoush as Nigeria prevailed 4-2 in the shootout. He was subsequently named Man of the Match.
It was the kind of performance that appeared to cement his position as Nigeria’s first choice goalkeeper.
Instead, the months that followed took his international career in a very different direction.
Nwabali left Chippa United in February after AFCON 2025, expecting to secure a move elsewhere. Despite reported interest from several clubs, including Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Simba SC and teams in Saudi Arabia, no transfer materialised.

The consequence was huge. Without regular competitive football, Nwabali lost his place in the Super Eagles squad while Maduka Okoye stepped into the starting role.
Okoye started Nigeria’s June friendlies against Poland and Portugal, while Arthur Okonkwo also emerged as another serious contender after receiving his first senior callup and keeping clean sheets against Zimbabwe and Jamaica at the 2026 Unity Cup.
Then came the Chippa comeback
Nwabali’s route back began in July when Chippa United announced his return, just five months after he had left the club.
The move was met with mixed reactions, particularly because the goalkeeper had previously departed in search of a bigger opportunity.
But rather than remain without a club, Nwabali returned to familiar territory and quickly reclaimed his place between the posts.
His comeback also gave him something he had been missing for months: regular competitive football.
He began the new season strongly, producing six saves and keeping a clean sheet against Golden Arrows before receiving Man of the Match recognition.
That return to action ultimately reopened the door to the Super Eagles.
Chelle included Nwabali alongside Okoye and Okonkwo in Nigeria’s squad for the September AFCON 2027 qualifiers, bringing the goalkeeper back into a competition for the number one shirt that had changed considerably during his absence.
And again Nwabali appears ready for the fight

There was already a hint of Nwabali’s attitude during Nigeria’s June friendly against Portugal. Asked about his absence from the national team, the goalkeeper responded:
“It’s not everybody that will keep. A lot of players need to play also.”
Now he is back and his latest post has added another layer to the story.
The video he shared deliberately returned to the moment when he was at his most influential for Nigeria, saving Salah and Marmoush during the AFCON bronze-medal shootout.
Then came the caption:
“I’m back, it’s time to keep crying 😂.”
It could simply be Nwabali celebrating his return and reminding everyone of what he did in Morocco. at the same it could be aimed at those who doubted whether he would make his way back into the Super Eagles.
It could even be playful banter directed at the goalkeepers who emerged during his absence. Or, as is often the case with cryptic social media posts, it may mean something known only to Nwabali himself.
There is no direct evidence identifying his target but what is clear is that the goalkeeper has gone from being Nigeria’s AFCON hero, to losing his club and international rhythm, to returning to Chippa and earning his way back into Chelle’s plans.
The real battle starts now in two fronts
Nwabali’s return does not guarantee that he will immediately reclaim his starting position.
Okoye has already established himself in recent Super Eagles matches, while Okonkwo has introduced another serious option into the conversation. that makes the Madagascar qualifier in Uyo particularly interesting.
Nwabali has returned to the squad with experience, an AFCON medal and a memorable penalty-shootout performance behind him.

But Okoye has momentum, while Okonkwo has the opportunity to continue building his international case.
The challenge for Nwabali is bigger than simply getting another callup. he has to prove that the goalkeeper who stood tall against Salah and Marmoush is still the man Nigeria should trust when the stakes rise.
