Katsina United have confirmed the death of defender Chinedu Ozor, bringing an end to a painful wave of confusion that briefly turned mourning into hope before plunging the Nigerian football community back into grief.
Ozor collapsed during a pre-season friendly against Niger Tornadoes at the Muhammad Dikko Stadium in Katsina on Tuesday and was subsequently taken for medical attention.
His death was initially reported following the incident, but reports later emerged that the young defender had allegedly regained consciousness while he was being taken to the morgue.
Those reports sparked renewed hope among supporters and members of the football community, with celebrations reportedly breaking out after the news that Ozor had supposedly shown signs of life. Katsina United have now firmly rejected that account.
In an emotional statement released on Wednesday, the club said Ozor “did not regain consciousness” and confirmed that he had died following the medical emergency.

Katsina United said the reports of Ozor recovering were understandable given the circumstances surrounding his family’s desperate search for further confirmation.
According to the club, Ozor’s family, overwhelmed by shock and unwilling to give up hope, requested additional medical confirmation before his body was taken to the morgue.
That period of uncertainty appears to have been the source of reports that the player had come back to life.
The club stressed that the moment of hope should not be interpreted as evidence that Ozor survived.
“He did not regain consciousness. He passed away,” Katsina United said.
The clarification came after the club said it had seen reports claiming that the player had regained consciousness or “came back to life”.
Katsina United described those reports as false and appealed to supporters and the wider football community to stop spreading unverified information.

Ozor’s death has produced one of the most emotionally difficult sequences surrounding a Nigerian professional footballer in recent years.
The defender had only recently joined Katsina United and was involved in the club’s preparations for the 2026/27 season.
His collapse during the friendly against Niger Tornadoes immediately turned a routine pre-season fixture into a medical emergency.
He was subsequently taken away for further medical attention, but the club has now confirmed that efforts to save him were unsuccessful.
The later reports of a possible recovery created a brief moment of hope before Wednesday’s official clarification returned the football community to mourning.

Katsina United appealed for restraint as the player’s family and teammates deal with the loss.
The club said the focus should now be on supporting those closest to Ozor rather than speculating about his final moments.
“Stop the rumours. Stop the false reports. Stop sharing unverified information,” the club said.
It also reminded the public that behind every headline and social media post was a grieving family and, behind the footballer’s name, a son, brother, teammate and friend.
“At this moment, what his family needs is compassion, not speculation. What his teammates need is space to grieve. And what Chinedu deserves is to be remembered with dignity,” the club said.
The circumstances surrounding Ozor’s collapse and death remain a deeply painful episode for Katsina United and Nigerian football.
But the club’s latest statement has removed the uncertainty over whether he survived the medical emergency. Chinedu Ozor is dead.
And as Katsina United asked, the focus now should be on allowing his family, teammates and friends to grieve the loss of a young footballer whose life ended far too soon.
