Okocha recalls discrimination in Germany, pressure at Fenerbahçe

Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha has opened up on the discrimination he experienced as an African player in Germany and the intense pressure he faced at Fenerbahçe.

Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha has opened up on the contrasting challenges he faced during the early stages of his European career, recalling the discrimination he experienced as an African player in Germany before confronting a different kind of pressure at Fenerbahçe.

Okocha moved to Europe as a young player and began making his name at Eintracht Frankfurt, where he had to compete for opportunities in an environment he believes made it particularly difficult for African players to establish themselves.

Looking back, the Nigerian football legend said African players often had to prove themselves to a much higher standard simply to receive the same opportunities as their European counterparts.

“I would not necessarily call it racism, but I believe there was clear discrimination, and as an African player, you had to be ten times better than a European to stand any chance,” Okocha said in an interview on the ObiOne podcast.

Limited opportunities for African players

Okocha recalled that German clubs operated under restrictions that limited the number of non-German players who could be selected.

“In Germany then, each club could only field three non-German players, no matter where they were from, so imagine how slim the chances were for a young African to break through,” he said.

Okocha at the time trying to establish himself in German football, the restrictions created another obstacle beyond the usual challenge of adapting to professional football in a new country.

He also noted that African players had little opportunity to publicly challenge such experiences at the time.

“There was no social media then, so we had no real voice,” he said, explaining that players largely had to concentrate on their careers and the responsibilities they carried for their families.

Fenerbahçe brought a different kind of pressure

After his spell in Germany, Okocha moved to Turkish giants Fenerbahçe following Nigeria’s triumph at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

His arrival in Turkey came with significant expectations, with the midfielder describing himself as a major signing immediately after winning Olympic gold.

The pressure, however, was not comparable to what he had experienced in Germany.

In Turkey, Okocha found an intensely passionate football culture where the supporters could make playing for the club an exhilarating experience when results were positive.

“I went there as a big transfer, straight from winning Olympic gold with Nigeria in Atlanta,” he recalled.

“The pressure in Turkey is huge, but you must love football to play there, because the fans are priceless when things are going well.”

The other side of that passion could be considerably more demanding.

“When it is not going well, though, it is hell,” Okocha said.

Despite the intensity surrounding the club, the Nigerian enjoyed his time in Istanbul so much that Fenerbahçe were reluctant to let him leave after his two-year spell.
