Calvin Bassey has joined an exclusive group of Nigerian players to captain a Premier League club after leading Fulham against Chelsea in Monday’s west London derby.
The 26-year-old defender wore the armband as Fulham began the 2026/27 campaign with a 3-2 defeat to Chelsea at Craven Cottage, adding his name to a list that includes some of the most recognisable figures in Super Eagles history.
Bassey’s captaincy came with an additional challenge as he was deployed at right centre-back, an unfamiliar position for the naturally left-footed defender, with regular centre-back Joachim Andersen suspended.
Despite the defeat, Bassey completed 77 of 80 passes, won two tackles and played the full 90 minutes before receiving a yellow card late in the game.
His appointment means Bassey now joins six other Nigerian internationals who have worn the captain’s armband for Premier League clubs, either as permanent leaders or stand-in captains.
Jay-Jay Okocha – Bolton Wanderers
Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha was among the first Nigerians to occupy such a prominent leadership role in the Premier League when Bolton Wanderers appointed him captain in 2003 following Guðni Bergsson’s retirement.

Sam Allardyce trusted the experienced midfielder to lead a dressing room containing players from different nationalities, with Okocha’s ability to communicate in several languages adding to his leadership qualities.
He subsequently captained Bolton to the 2004 League Cup final, although they lost 2-1 to Middlesbrough.
Joseph Yobo – Everton
Joseph Yobo made Nigerian and African history at Everton when he became the first African player to captain the club, taking the armband against Larissa in the UEFA Cup in October 2007.
The centre-back had already established himself as a key figure at Goodison Park, making 220 league appearances during his Everton career before leaving in 2010.
Nwankwo Kanu – Portsmouth and West Bromwich Albion
Nwankwo Kanu also experienced Premier League captaincy during his spells with Portsmouth and West Bromwich Albion.
The former Arsenal striker was one of the senior figures in Harry Redknapp’s Portsmouth squad and wore the armband during his time at the club.
Kanu’s Portsmouth career also delivered one of his most memorable English football moments when he scored the winning goal in the 2008 FA Cup final against Cardiff City.
Shola Ameobi – Newcastle United
Shola Ameobi’s leadership role at Newcastle United grew naturally from his extraordinary longevity at the club.
The Nigerian striker came through Newcastle’s academy and spent 14 years with the first team, making 397 appearances in all competitions.
He also captained the side on Premier League matchdays when senior leaders were unavailable, adding leadership responsibilities to a career that produced 298 Premier League appearances.

Wilfred Ndidi – Leicester City
Wilfred Ndidi joined the group when he captained Leicester City against Liverpool at Anfield in December 2022.
With regular captain Jonny Evans unavailable, Brendan Rodgers handed the armband to the Nigerian midfielder, who started the match as Leicester eventually suffered a 2-1 defeat.
The moment reflected Ndidi’s standing at Leicester after years of establishing himself as one of the club’s most important midfielders.
William Troost-Ekong – Watford
William Troost-Ekong also wore the captain’s armband for Watford during their Premier League return.
The Nigeria international led the Hornets against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Vicarage Road in September 2021, although Watford went on to lose 2-0.
Troost-Ekong had joined Watford from Udinese the previous year and played 68 times for the club before leaving in 2023.
Calvin Bassey – Fulham
Bassey is the latest Nigerian to enter the group, taking responsibility for leading Fulham in the opening game of the new Premier League season.
The defender had already captained Fulham during their final two pre-season matches against Malaga and Stuttgart, giving Arbeloa an early indication of his leadership qualities.

The Fulham manager has also praised Bassey’s ability to defend in space, his work rate and his suitability for the high defensive line he wants his team to play. though Bassey’s first competitive outing as captain ended in defeat, but the occasion remains significant.
