AFCON rivals Ivory Coast and Cameroon share points in Marrakech classic

Group F rivals Ivory Coast and Cameroon shared the points after a high-quality 1-1 draw in Marrakech, as two of Africa’s traditional heavyweights delivered a compelling contest that kept both firmly on course for the knockout stages of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Both teams arrived on matchday two buoyed by narrow opening wins, and the confidence gained from those results was evident in a first half built on discipline, physicality and defensive control. Clear chances were rare, but the intensity never dipped.

Cameroon came closest to breaking the deadlock before the interval when Christian Kofane’s first-time strike was brilliantly pushed onto the crossbar by Ivory Coast goalkeeper Yahia Fofana.

It was a moment that briefly lifted the crowd, which included high-profile observers such as Jules Kounde, Aurelien Tchouameni and Kylian Mbappé.

The game exploded into life after the restart, with the opening stages of the second half producing drama in quick succession. Ivory Coast thought they had moved ahead when Franck Kessie finished calmly, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.

Moments later, Cameroon were again denied by the woodwork as Danny Namaso’s deflected effort crashed against the frame of the goal.

The breakthrough instead came at the other end, with Amad Diallo producing a moment of individual brilliance. The winger worked space on the edge of the box before curling an unstoppable strike beyond the goalkeeper to give the defending champions the lead.

Cameroon refused to be rattled and responded with purpose. Their equaliser arrived through Junior Tchamadeu, whose strike from the right side of the area took a decisive deflection off Ghislain Konan and looped over the back-pedalling Yahia Fofana, the goalkeeper’s outstretched hand unable to prevent it from crossing the line.
