Al Hilal convince 38-goal NPFL forward Adetunji to represent Sudan

Al Hilal and Nigerian striker Sunday Adetunji has reportedly obtained Sudanese citizenship after being convinced by the club to switch nationality.

According to African football journalist Micky Jnr, the Nigerian forward was persuaded by the Sudanese champions following a string of impressive performances that helped Al Hilal qualify for the CAF Champions League group stage.

Adetunji, 27, joined Al Hilal from Kosovo’s FC Ballkani, where he scored 18 goals in 32 appearances last season.

Since arriving in Omdurman, he has maintained his scoring form netting in the CECAFA Kagame Cup against Madani and Kator, and scoring twice in the CAF Champions League win over Kenya Police that sealed Al Hilal’s group stage place.

Adetunji built a strong reputation in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), where he played over 103 matches and scored 38 goals across spells with Rivers United, Abia Warriors, Shooting Stars, Enyimba, and Plateau United.

His European journey included stints with KF Shkupi in North Macedonia where he was league top scorer with 20 goals.

He also featured for FK Čukarički in Serbia, and FC Ballkani in Kosovo, where he scored four goals in four UEFA Conference League matches.

Adetunji made his international debut for Nigeria in a friendly against Mexico in 2021, but his switch now allows him to represent Sudan at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 in Morocco.

Meanwhile, Al Hilal defender Steve Ebuela, formerly of DR Congo, has also reportedly obtained Sudanese citizenship and is now eligible to feature for Sudan at the continental showpiece.
