Brown Ideye Retires: 17-year career, 431 matches, 155 goals, £43m in transfers across 11 clubs and 9 countries

Brown Ideye, a key member of Nigeria’s 2013 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 36.

The forward ends a career that took him across 11 clubs in 9 countries over 17 years, amassing 431 appearances, 155 goals, and approximately £43 million in transfer fees.

Reflecting on his journey, Ideye shared on social media:

“After much thought and consideration with mixed emotions, I’ve decided to retire from professional football.

This game made me and gave me everything, incredible joy, sad days, the opportunity to travel and see the world, lifelong friendships, and so many unforgettable memories.”

Ideye began his professional career with Bayelsa United before moving to Ocean Boys, where he helped the team win the Nigeria Premier League in 2006.

“I thank God, my family, friends, teammates, coaches, journalists, fans, and the Nigeria Football Federation for being part of my journey.”

He moved to Europe in January 2008, joining Swiss side Neuchâtel Xamax.

Over the next decade and a half, he played for Sochaux (France), Dynamo Kyiv (Ukraine), West Bromwich Albion (England), Olympiacos (Greece), Tianjin Teda (China), Málaga (Spain), Göztepe (Turkey), Al-Yarmouk (Kuwait), and concluded his playing career with Enyimba in Nigeria.

On representing Nigeria, Ideye added:

“Thank you, Nigeria, for the opportunity you gave me to wear the national colours and be among the Super Eagles.”

Internationally, he played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, scoring in the semi-final against Mali and featuring in the final against Burkina Faso.

He was also part of Nigeria’s squad for the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup.

Final Season 

Ideye’s final professional season was with Enyimba in the Nigerian Premier Football League, where he played 10 games and scored 4 goals.

After leaving the club at the end of the 2024–25 season, he publicly raised concerns over player welfare and unpaid bonuses.

Looking ahead, Ideye concluded:

“Though my time as a pro-player has ended, football will always be a part of my life as I enter my next chapter.”
