The race towards continental football has officially begun after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced July 25 as the deadline for all member associations to submit the names of clubs that will participate in the 2026/27 CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.
The development places Nigerian representatives Enugu Rangers and Rivers United on alert as both clubs intensify preparations for another campaign on the African stage following their top-two finishes in the Nigeria Premier Football League.
Rangers, who finished as league champions, and Rivers United, who secured second place, are expected to fly Nigeria’s flag in the CAF Champions League. The deadline now puts additional pressure on both clubs to conclude player recruitment, squad restructuring and registration processes ahead of the submission date.

CAF also clarified the replacement mechanism should any qualified club be unable to participate.
For countries with a single Champions League slot, the league runners-up would inherit the position if the champion withdraws. For countries entitled to two representatives, replacement places would go to the teams that finished third and fourth respectively.
While Rangers and Rivers United appear certain of their continental places, Nigeria’s representatives in the CAF Confederation Cup are yet to be fully confirmed.
Shooting Stars, who finished third in the NPFL and are in line for one of the Confederation Cup slots, must still wait for the outcome of the 2026 President Federation Cup final.
The second ticket will be determined when Ikorodu City face El-Kanemi Warriors in the Federation Cup final scheduled for July 11 at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State.
Should either finalist secure the cup, they would earn the right to represent Nigeria in the Confederation Cup next season.

Beyond the registration deadline, CAF has also unveiled the complete calendar for the 2026/27 inter-club competitions.
The preliminary rounds will be played across September and October, with the first phase scheduled between September 4 and 13, while the second preliminary round will take place from October 16 to 25.
The lucrative group stage phase is set to begin on November 27, 2026 and run until January 23, 2027, featuring six rounds of fixtures.
The knockout stages will commence with the quarter-finals from February 26 to March 7, 2027, before the semi-finals are played between April 9 and 17.
CAF has also confirmed that the finals of both competitions will take place between May 9 and May 31, 2027, although exact dates are yet to be announced.
