CAF Champions League

CAF format shake-up raises stakes for Rangers and Rivers United ahead of 2026/27 Champions League

CAF has announced the 2025/26 schedule for the Champions League and Confederation Cup, with preliminary rounds starting in September.
CAF has confirmed major format changes for the 2026/27 Champions League and Confederation Cup, while setting July 25 as the deadline for member associations to submit participating clubs.

Nigerian clubs preparing for continental football next season have been handed a major reality check after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed significant format changes for the 2026/27 CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.

The new regulations, alongside the release of the full inter-club competition calendar, mean Enugu Rangers and Rivers United will head into next season’s Champions League knowing there is no longer a safety net should they fall short in the preliminary rounds.

CAF has already fixed July 25 as the deadline for all member associations to submit the names of clubs that will represent them in next season’s continental competitions.

Nigeria league champions Enugu Rangers and runners-up Rivers United are expected to occupy the country’s two Champions League slots after finishing first and second respectively in the NPFL.

However, CAF’s latest competition reforms have significantly increased the importance of the preliminary rounds.

No more Champions League drop-down

One of the biggest changes announced by CAF is the continuation of the cancellation of the additional Confederation Cup preliminary round.

As a result, clubs eliminated in the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League will no longer drop into the CAF Confederation Cup.

Previously, teams knocked out at that stage were granted a second opportunity to continue their continental campaign through the Confederation Cup playoff round. That pathway has now been removed.

For Rangers and Rivers United, it means any elimination in the second preliminary round of the Champions League will bring an immediate end to their African season.

The change is expected to increase the pressure on clubs during the qualifying rounds and place greater emphasis on early squad preparation, player recruitment and registration.

CAF says the adjustment is designed to reduce fixture congestion and create a clearer progression structure across both competitions.

Easier route for Confederation Cup clubs

The changes also affect clubs competing in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Under the revised format, teams that successfully navigate the second preliminary round of the Confederation Cup will advance directly into the group stage.

The removal of the crossover playoff round simplifies the route into the competition’s main phase and reduces the number of matches clubs must play before reaching the group stage.

Shooting Stars still waiting

While Rangers and Rivers United already know they are heading to the Champions League, Nigeria’s Confederation Cup representatives have not been fully confirmed.

Shooting Stars, who finished third in the NPFL, are in line for one of the country’s Confederation Cup tickets.

The second slot will be decided by the President Federation Cup final between Ikorodu City and El-Kanemi Warriors.

The final is scheduled for July 11 at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State, with kickoff set for 4 p.m.

Full CAF calendar unveiled

CAF has also published the complete calendar for the 2026/27 inter-club season.

The first preliminary round will take place between September 4 and 13, while the second preliminary round is scheduled for October 16 to 25.

The group stage will begin on November 27, 2026 and conclude on January 24, 2027 across six matchdays.

The quarter-finals will be played between February 26 and March 7, 2027, before the semi-finals take place from April 9 to April 18.

Both the Champions League and Confederation Cup finals are scheduled to be played between May 9 and May 31, 2027, with CAF yet to confirm the exact dates and host venues.

Nigerian clubs face crucial weeks

With Nigeria remaining among the CAF member associations allocated two slots in both competitions, clubs now have a clearer picture of the road ahead.

The removal of the Champions League-to-Confederation Cup drop-down route means there will be no second chance if they stumble in the qualifying rounds.

As the July 25 submission deadline approaches, attention will now shift to transfer business, squad strengthening and player registration as Nigeria’s representatives prepare for a demanding continental campaign.
