England U-20 women’s head coach Lydia Bedford has admitted her side struggled to cope with the Falconets’ direct approach and physicality after Nigeria swept the Young Lionesses aside 3-0 in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
Nigeria produced one of their most complete performances of the tournament in Bielsko-Biala, taking control early through Tosin Rafiu before Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei and Mary Mamudu added second-half goals to secure a place in the quarterfinals.
The Falconets also had goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma to thank for preserving their advantage when England were awarded a penalty before half time. Uzoma denied Rachel Maltby, pushing the effort onto the crossbar to ensure Nigeria went into the interval with their lead intact.
The result brought England’s campaign to an end, but the coach acknowledged that Nigeria presented problems her team could not consistently solve.
“Nigeria’s forwards were very effective in being direct and physical, and I think that’s something that perhaps we struggled to compete with at times.”

That physical battle was part of a wider performance in which Nigeria made the most of their opportunities, while England were unable to turn their own promising moments into a response.
Bedford nevertheless reflected positively on England’s experience in the tournament, despite the disappointment of leaving at the first knockout stage.
“I think it’s been a fantastic tournament. We’ve enjoyed being part of it, but we’re disappointed to be going home at this stage,” Bedford told FIFA.
While England’s World Cup journey is over, Bedford believes the experience could prove important for the players as they move towards senior international football.
“I think this experience will be extremely important to them as they move into their senior careers and hopefully push towards either Sarina Wiegman’s squad in Brazil next year or work with me in the U-23s going forward.”
The defeat also extended Nigeria’s unbeaten record against England at the U-20 Women’s World Cup. The teams had previously drawn in 2008 and 2010 before Nigeria claimed a 2-1 victory in 2014, and the Falconets added another emphatic result to that history in Poland.
The victory was Nigeria’s second of the tournament after their 10-1 demolition of New Caledonia, following a 2-0 defeat to Spain and a goalless draw with China in Group F.
Moses Aduku’s side have now scored 13 goals across four matches and recorded consecutive clean sheets, with the latest coming against an England side that had been unable to find a way through Nigeria’s defensive resistance.

England’s exit was followed by a gracious message from the English Football Association, which congratulated the Falconets after the final whistle.

The Falconets can now turn their attention to the quarterfinals, where they will face either hosts Poland or Colombia on Sunday, September 20, at Stadion Miejski ŁKS Łódź in Łódź.
