Rivers United’s CAF Champions League campaign ended in heartbreak on Sunday as a dramatic 2-2 draw against FC San Pedro in Uyo sent the Ivorian side through to the next round.
The Nigerian champions had looked to have given themselves a useful platform after holding San Pedro to a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Côte d’Ivoire, but the return fixture at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium proved far more complicated.
San Pedro struck twice in the first half to put Rivers United in serious danger of elimination, leaving the hosts with a difficult task after the interval.
Rather than collapse, however, Rivers United produced the character that had been evident in the opening leg. They increased the pressure, committed more players forward and eventually dragged themselves level at 2-2.
The comeback briefly raised hopes of a remarkable turnaround, but San Pedro held firm through the closing stages to protect their advantage and secure qualification.
The result brought a painful conclusion to a tie that had appeared finely poised after the first meeting.

Rivers United had gone to the Laurent Pokou Stadium for the opening leg and emerged with a 1-1 draw after San Pedro took the lead through Issouf Dosso. Substitute Iyowuna Douglas restored parity in the 69th minute, keeping Finidi George’s side unbeaten and leaving the decisive encounter in Uyo.
That result had placed the Nigerian side in an encouraging position, particularly with the second leg being played in front of their home supporters.
But San Pedro showed from the outset that they had no intention of simply defending their way through the tie.
The visitors took control during the first half and scored twice to establish a commanding position, turning what had looked like a favourable situation for Rivers United into a fight for survival.

At 2-2, the momentum had shifted dramatically, with Rivers United now needing one more decisive moment to complete a comeback that had seemed unlikely only minutes earlier.

That moment never came as San Pedro resisted the sustained pressure and managed the closing stages well enough to preserve the result and book their place in the next round.
For Rivers United, the disappointment will be magnified by the manner of the elimination. They had avoided defeat away from home in the first leg, had the advantage of playing the return fixture in Uyo and had even recovered from a twogoal deficit on the night.
The defeat also interrupts what had been an encouraging start to the season for Finidi’s side. Rivers United opened their Nigeria Premier Football League campaign with a 2-0 victory over Plateau United, but their continental challenge demanded a different level of concentration and resilience.
In the end, Rivers United showed enough character to make the final stages of the tie uncomfortable for San Pedro, but not enough to overturn the damage inflicted before the break.
The night belonged to the visitors, who arrived in Nigeria needing to negotiate a difficult away assignment and left Uyo with qualification secured.
