Tunisia coach Hervé Renard conceded Japan were the better team after a crushing 4-0 World Cup defeat, admitting the scoreline reflected the gap between the two sides.

Herve Renard delivered a brutally honest assessment of Tunisia’s performance after their 4-0 defeat to Japan, admitting the Asian side were simply too strong on the night.

The heavy loss leaves Tunisia’s World Cup campaign hanging by a thread and facing the prospect of an early exit, with Renard acknowledging that the scoreline accurately reflected the balance of play between the two teams.

Speaking during his post-match press conference, the French coach offered little in the way of excuses after watching Japan produce one of the most dominant displays of the tournament so far.

“It was not the performance we were hoping for,” Renard told reporters.

“We were hoping for a reaction that would be more important.”

Tunisia entered the contest needing a positive result to revive their hopes but found themselves overwhelmed by a Japanese side that controlled key moments of the match and punished defensive lapses with ruthless efficiency.

While many coaches might have searched for mitigating circumstances after such a defeat, Renard instead chose to recognise the quality of the opposition.

“The score of this second match is heavy,” he said.

“But it reflects the difference between the two teams tonight.”

“Congratulations to this Japanese team.”

The remarks highlighted the respect Japan have earned through their performances on the global stage in recent years. Having established themselves as one of Asia’s leading football nations, they once again demonstrated their ability to compete with and outperform established opponents at major tournaments.

Renard pointed to shortcomings within his own team’s display, particularly in the defensive intensity required at World Cup level.

The coach suggested his side only produced brief periods of the aggression and discipline needed to trouble an opponent of Japan’s calibre.

“We will only be able to retain 20 minutes, the first 20 minutes of the second half,” he said.

“Having shown a little more aggressiveness and rigour in the game, but of course it is not enough in a football game.”

The result leaves Tunisia facing a difficult final group match against the Netherlands, with qualification hopes fading rapidly after a second defeat in as many games.

Despite the disappointment, Renard’s immediate focus appeared to be on ensuring his players finish the tournament with dignity rather than dwelling on the scale of the setback.

The former Zambia, Morocco and Saudi Arabia coach has built a reputation throughout his career for demanding accountability from his teams, and his post-match comments reflected that same approach.

There was no attempt to shift blame or hide behind circumstances. Instead, Renard accepted a painful reality: Tunisia were beaten by a superior team.
