Manchester United teenager Chido Obi has emerged as a transfer target for Bundesliga side Cologne, with initial talks already held over a season-long loan move for one of Europe’s most exciting young forwards.
According to multiple reports, including Sky Germany, Bild, Geissblog and Football Insider, Cologne have identified the 18-year-old as a priority attacking reinforcement ahead of their return to the Bundesliga. Discussions remain at an early stage, but the German club are understood to favour a loan agreement and are exploring the possibility of including a purchase option.
Obi is also believed to be open to the prospect of playing in Germany, where regular first team football could accelerate his development after an impressive rise through Manchester United’s ranks.

The Danish Under-20 international enjoyed an outstanding campaign with United’s youth sides, producing 26 goal contributions in 37 competitive appearances. Standing at 1.88 metres, Obi has earned a reputation for combining physical strength with clinical finishing, qualities that have made him one of Europe’s most highly rated teenage strikers.

His rapid development has already seen him break into Manchester United’s senior squad. The striker featured seven times in the Premier League during the 2024/25 season, gaining valuable experience despite not opening his first team scoring account.
Obi’s reputation as an elite prospect stretches back several years. After beginning his development at Copenhagen, he joined Arsenal’s academy in 2022, where his extraordinary goalscoring exploits quickly attracted widespread attention.
Among his standout performances was an astonishing 10-goal display against Liverpool at Under-16 level in November 2023. He later followed that by scoring 32 goals in just 18 appearances for Arsenal’s Under-18 side, establishing himself as one of the most prolific academy forwards in England.

Rather than extending his stay in north London, Obi opted to join Manchester United in the summer of 2024. His decision reportedly came despite interest from several leading European clubs, including Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.
Cologne are searching for greater firepower after missing out on other attacking targets. Fraser Hornby has already chosen to join Wolfsburg, while Magdeburg striker Mateusz Żukowski remains under consideration but is expected to command a significantly higher transfer fee following an impressive campaign.
That has increased the appeal of pursuing Obi, whose combination of age, potential and proven scoring record makes him an attractive option as Cologne prepare for life back in the Bundesliga.

Manchester United must now decide whether to retain one of their brightest academy graduates or allow him to gain valuable senior experience elsewhere, with Cologne hoping they can provide the platform for the next stage of the teenager’s promising career.
