‘Osimhen belongs in a top club’ – Obafemi Martins backs Nigerian striker for major move

Former Super Eagles striker Obafemi Martins has backed Victor Osimhen for a move to one of Europe’s elite clubs, insisting the Nigerian forward has outgrown his current situation.

Despite a standout campaign in the Turkish Süper Lig, Osimhen’s future remains uncertain, with top European teams closely monitoring his next move.

After falling out of favor under Antonio Conte at Napoli, Osimhen made a summer 2024 loan switch to Galatasaray, where he has been in scintillating form.

The 26-year-old striker has netted 23 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions, with 20 of those coming in 22 league matches, along with four assists.

Obafemi Martins: “Osimhen Belongs in a Top Club”

Obafemi Martins, who enjoyed a successful career in Europe with Inter Milan and Newcastle United, believes Osimhen is destined for another major move. Speaking to Africafoot, Martins said:

“Victor is having an incredible season. He’s a world-class striker with all the qualities of a great forward. He is strong, powerful, and intelligent with his movement. His ability to score from different positions makes him a nightmare for defenders.

Given his performances this season, I have no doubt he will establish himself at a top European club. Several big teams are already working on signing him, and that can only be beneficial for his career.”

Osimhen’s Influence on Nigeria’s World Cup Aspirations

Martins also highlighted the significance of Osimhen’s club performances on Nigeria’s national team as they aim to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“He is our number one attacking weapon. Victor is central to Eric Sekou Chelle’s plans for the Super Eagles, and his current form is a huge boost for Nigeria. His next club move will also have an impact on his performances at the national level.”

Galatasaray vice-president Abdullah Kavukcu recently confirmed that five major European clubs are closely monitoring Osimhen’s situation, with a decision expected in April.

“Osimhen will announce his decision in April. At the moment, five of the biggest clubs in the world are interested in him. His arrival here was a dream – he came, and for now, he’s playing with us.

In January, there were discussions about a transfer, but he stayed. He likes Galatasaray very much.”
