Turkish rivalry brewing as Fenerbahçe move for Osimhen’s Nigeria teammate

Calvin Bassey made his 100th appearance for Fulham as Alex Iwobi returned from injury in the club’s 1-1 Premier League draw against Wolves at Molineux.

Calvin Bassey could be heading for a new chapter in Turkish football, with Fenerbahçe reportedly identifying the Fulham defender as their number one defensive transfer target ahead of the summer window.

The move could potentially set up an intriguing Super Eagles rivalry in Turkey involving fellow Nigerian star Victor Osimhen, whose future continues to generate speculation following his time in the Turkish league.

According to reports from Turkey, Fenerbahçe presidential candidate Aziz Yildirim has placed Bassey at the top of the club’s recruitment plans as part of an ambitious rebuilding project focused heavily on Premier League-based talent.

The Nigerian international is being targeted for the left centre-back role, while other names reportedly under consideration include Senegalese defender Malick Diouf and Manchester City winger Savinho.

Bassey joined Fulham from Ajax in 2023 and has become one of the club’s most reliable defenders, making over 100 appearances and scoring four goals.

Before moving to England, the 26-year-old rose to prominence with Rangers, where he won the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup.

The defender’s performances for Nigeria have also earned praise in recent years, with Osimhen previously describing him as one of Africa’s standout defenders.

Despite the growing transfer interest, any move for Bassey could prove difficult.

Fulham still hold a strong negotiating position, with the Nigerian contracted until 2027 and the club also retaining the option to extend his deal by another year.

Yildirim, who previously served as Fenerbahçe president between 1998 and 2018, is currently campaigning to return to office and has promised supporters several high-profile signings if elected.
