Moses Usor has revealed that advice from fellow Super Eagles winger Moses Simon gave him the confidence to take on defenders and produce the decisive moment in Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Madagascar.
Usor came off the bench to make his Nigeria debut in Friday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier and delivered an immediate impact, scoring the winning goal in the second half.
The LASK winger received the ball inside Nigeria’s half before driving forward, beating two defenders with his pace and skill and firing a superb effort into the net.
But the 24-year-old says the confidence to take on the Madagascar defence came from Simon during the warm-up.
“I was warming up with Moses Simon when they called me, and we went in together. He advised me to just play my game and be myself,” Usor told the Super Eagles media.
“He said if you have the ball and you want to go one-on-one, you can take the risk. He gave me the confidence to play the game.
“I went in with the mentality of taking risks and showing what I can do. It’s still a surprise to me. I still feel it is a dream, playing at this level. It is still like a dream to me.
“I was like, ‘Is this me?’ After my goal, I went down on my knees to pray. I really thank God for it.”
A dream debut for Usor
Moses Usor has revealed how Moses Simon’s advice encouraged him to take on defenders and score the spectacular winner against Madagascar.
The goal capped an emotional evening for Usor, who had waited for his opportunity to make his Super Eagles debut.
The occasion was made even more special by the presence of his family, who watched as he announced himself on the international stage.
“It was a different feeling because my family were also there. I was really happy seeing everyone there,” he said.
“This is something I have always dreamt of. It’s a good feeling being in camp with these players. I have always dreamt of this moment.
“It’s different playing alongside Lookman, Bassey and the others.”
Usor’s performance also gives Eric Chelle another attacking option ahead of Tuesday’s AFCON qualifier against Guinea-Bissau in Bissau.
With Victor Osimhen unavailable for the September fixtures and uncertainty surrounding some of Nigeria’s other attacking options, Usor’s impact against Madagascar could strengthen his case for another appearance.

The winger is now determined to build on his memorable introduction and continue contributing whenever he gets the opportunity.
“I will always give my best whenever I’m on the pitch and contribute to the attack. I will do my best whenever I’m on the pitch and defend the badge,” Usor added.
“That is very important because I know Nigerians will be expecting more from me, and I will continue to give my best for the team.”
