West Ham turn to three-time promotion-winning manager after Nuno exit

West Ham have moved quickly after Nuno’s exit, turning to a familiar face with a remarkable record of winning promotion. Why does this appointment matter today

West Ham United have moved quickly to address the uncertainty surrounding their managerial position, with the club determined to prevent a difficult start to the season from derailing their ambition of returning to the Premier League.

The Hammers had been searching for a new direction after concluding that a change was necessary, following a disappointing run of results that left their promotion campaign under pressure.

But rather than turn to an unfamiliar name, the London club have opted for someone who understands its identity, has a history with its supporters and knows what it takes to navigate the Championship.

Scott Parker has been appointed West Ham’s new men’s first team head coach, signing a two-and-a-half-year contract that will run until the summer of 2029.

The 46-year-old former Hammers captain returns to London Stadium with an immediate responsibility: taking charge of Wednesday evening’s Championship fixture away to Cardiff City.

A familiar face with a promotion record

Parker’s appointment brings West Ham a manager whose recent coaching career has been defined by success in the very competition they are trying to escape.

He has secured promotion from the Championship to the Premier League with all three clubs he has previously managed in the division: Fulham in 2020, AFC Bournemouth in 2022 and Burnley in 2025.

His achievements with Burnley were particularly recognised when he won the EFL Championship Manager of the Season award for the 2024/25 campaign.

That record offers West Ham a compelling reason to place their confidence in him. The club are not simply looking for someone to steady the team after Nuno Espírito Santo’s departure; they need a head coach with a demonstrated understanding of the demands of a promotion campaign.

Parker’s experience of achieving that objective three times gives him a strong foundation, although repeating the feat with a club currently struggling for consistency will present a different challenge.

A return to the club that shaped his playing career

The appointment also represents a return to familiar surroundings for Parker, who spent four years at West Ham as a player between 2007 and 2011.

He made 129 appearances for the club and became one of its most respected figures during that period, winning the Hammer of the Year award three consecutive times.

His individual achievements extended beyond east London. Parker received the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award in the 2010/11 season, becoming only the second West Ham player in the club’s history to win the prestigious honour after Bobby Moore.

The connection with the supporters remains an important part of his return, and Parker made clear that the opportunity carries considerable personal significance.

“It is a very proud moment for me to step into this role and return to a Club that means so much to me and my family. A lot of very fond memories of my time here – four years of probably the best football I played in my career.”

He also spoke about the relationship he developed with the fanbase during his playing days, describing the warmth and respect he experienced as something that stood out throughout his career.

The new head coach arrives at a club where the gap between attacking production and defensive reliability has become a major source of frustration.

West Ham had scored 33 goals in their first 13 Championship matches, more than any other side in the division at the time of Nuno’s departure. However, they had also conceded 18 league goals and fallen to eighth place, six points behind leaders Middlesbrough.

Their 3-1 defeat to West Bromwich Albion intensified the pressure, with supporters at London Stadium expressing their dissatisfaction during the match.

Parker believes consistency and commitment will be central to changing the team’s fortunes.

“I’ve been in this division three times and I’ve got out of this division three times. This is a tough division, there is absolutely no denying it. And I will use every ounce of my experience, every ounce of my knowledge, to have an understanding of what we’re going to need to bring consistency.

“And that’s going to be the key word for all of us really. The consistency of what we do and the commitment levels that we go to will give us the best opportunity to get out of this division and be the team that we can be.”

He added that his enthusiasm and desire to take the job were immediate once discussions began, while expressing confidence in the ambition shared by the club’s leadership.

West Ham explain why Parker was their choice

Interim chief executive Karim Virani said Parker was the unanimous choice of the board, pointing to his managerial achievements, playing career and understanding of West Ham.

“We are delighted to welcome Scott and his family back to the Club. He is someone who is held in high regard at West Ham United and throughout the game, and he was the unanimous choice of the Board to become our new Head Coach.”

Virani also highlighted Parker’s knowledge of the club’s identity and supporters, alongside his proven record in the Championship, as important factors behind the decision.

The club believes those qualities make him the right person to lead its immediate promotion challenge and its wider ambitions.Parker will work with first team coaches Steve Potts, Gerard Prenderville and Billy Lepine, while former team-mate Mark Noble will also work closely with him. West Ham said further details of the permanent backroom structure would be announced in due course.

Cardiff City provides Parker’s first test

There will be little time for an extended introduction. Parker is expected to take charge immediately, with West Ham travelling to Cardiff City on Wednesday evening for their next Championship fixture.

The appointment follows the club’s confirmation that Nuno Espírito Santo had left with immediate effect alongside assistant head coach Rui Pedro Silva and goalkeeper coach Rui Barbosa.

Mark Noble, Steve Potts and Gerard Prenderville had initially been placed in temporary charge of squad preparations following that announcement.
