Lionel Scaloni believes Lionel Messi’s influence on Argentina stretches far beyond goals after the captain once again inspired the reigning world champions to victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Messi scored twice in Argentina’s 2-0 win over Austria in Texas on Monday night, taking his tally to five goals in just two matches and helping La Albiceleste secure qualification for the knockout stage with a game to spare.
The performance also saw the 38-year-old continue his remarkable pursuit of World Cup history, adding another chapter to a tournament career that has already placed him among the greatest players ever to grace the competition.
Speaking after the victory, the Argentina coach explained how the entire team responds whenever their captain begins to dictate proceedings.
“It is logical that it is a blow not to score a penalty, but knowing that when Leo is activated, everyone is activated,” Scaloni told reporters.
“I think that is also a merit of the team.”
The coach was referring to a period during the match when Argentina failed to convert a first-half penalty and briefly lost momentum before regaining control of the contest.

Scaloni revealed that despite the setback, he never sensed panic within his squad because of the maturity and experience developed over years of competing together.
“The team came back and did it again,” he said.
“They did three important things after the penalty. It is true there were a few minutes where nothing seemed to happen, but that is also due to the maturity this team has.”
Argentina were forced to work harder than many expected against an Austria side that pressed aggressively and competed physically throughout the encounter.
While Austria enjoyed spells of possession, Scaloni praised his players for remaining composed and understanding the demands of the match.
“When you have to suffer, the team does it,” he explained.
“We know how to suffer. That is a merit of the team.
“I think the merit of the team is to know at every moment what to do.”
The world champions have now won their opening two matches of the tournament and sit comfortably at the top of Group J.
Messi’s five-goal haul has understandably dominated headlines, but Scaloni highlighted the collective effort behind Argentina’s strong start.
He singled out his midfield unit of Rodrigo De Paul, Alexis Mac Allister, Enzo Fernandez and Thiago Almada for their work both in and out of possession, describing their physical commitment as one of the foundations of the team’s success.
“Our game happens a lot there,” Scaloni said.
“They are making a huge display.
“The most important thing, besides playing with the ball, is that they also work for the team.
“I think that is where a large part of the strength of our team lies.”
