Super Eagles defender Igoh Ogbu has opened up about his decision to turn down an opportunity to represent Norway, choosing instead to stay true to his dream of playing for Nigeria.
The 25-year-old, who was part of Nigeria’s squad at the 2019 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations and FIFA U-20 World Cup, moved to Norway in 2018 and quickly established himself as one of the country’s top defenders.
Ogbu initially signed a four-year contract with Rosenborg, going on loan to Levanger and Sogndal before making a permanent move to Lillestrøm. His outstanding performances in the 2022 season earned him a €2.5 million transfer to Slavia Prague in January 2023.

A Father’s Wish and a Personal Decision
Reflecting on his choice to reject Norway’s offer, Ogbu revealed that his decision was deeply personal and influenced by his late father’s wishes.
“There was a chance to play for Norway in my last season with Lillestrøm,” Ogbu told SCORENigeria. “But I always knew I would get my chance with the Super Eagles.”
That belief has now paid off, as Ogbu is set to represent Nigeria in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
Making History in the Czech Republic
Ogbu heads into international duty in top form, fresh off a standout performance in Slavia Prague’s 3-0 win over FK Jablonec in the Czech Fortuna Liga. The Nigerian defender made history by scoring his first-ever goal with his left foot, capitalizing on a misplaced pass from the opposing goalkeeper to find the net in the ninth minute.

Slavia Prague head coach Jindřich Trpišovský heaped praise on Ogbu, highlighting his rare ability to contribute offensively despite being a defensive stalwart.
“Igoh usually defends the opponent’s best player and is dominant in duels, He has calmed down recently, feels good, and I think it was his first goal with his left foot in his career.” Trpišovský told Slavia Prague’s official website.
Ogbu has built a reputation as a physically dominant, aerially strong centre-back, with nine of his ten career goals coming from headers. Before his latest goal, the only exception was a right-footed strike for Lillestrøm against FK Jerv in April 2022.

With two goals in his last three league matches, Ogbu is proving he can make an impact at both ends of the pitch. His coach believes the Nigerian is an underrated talent whose market value is not fully appreciated.
“He timed the whole situation perfectly and executed it brilliantly, he is extremely important for us, and his performances far exceed his current price tag. If he played in another league, his value would be much higher. He has become a complete player.” Trpišovský added.
Ogbu prepares for his first senior international appearance, his form and growing reputation suggest he could be a crucial figure in Nigeria’s World Cup qualification campaign.
