The 2026 FIFA World Cup has reached the knockout stage with 16 teams left standing as traditional football powers prepare to battle emerging challengers in what promises to be a thrilling race to the quarterfinals.

The Round of 16 begins on Saturday, July 4, following the conclusion of an entertaining Round of 32 that delivered dramatic upsets, penalty shootouts and memorable performances across the United States.

While perennial contenders including Argentina, Brazil, France, England, Spain and Portugal remain firmly on course for the title, the tournament has also produced compelling stories from nations such as Morocco, Norway, Paraguay and co-hosts Canada, the United States and Mexico.

Host nations making history

For the first time in World Cup history, all three host nations have reached the Round of 16, with each eyeing unprecedented achievements.

Canada have already rewritten their football history books after securing their first-ever knockout victory, edging South Africa 1-0 thanks to Stephen Eustaquio’s late winner. Jesse Marsch’s side now face one of the tournament favourites, Morocco, in Philadelphia.

Mexico are enjoying one of their finest World Cup campaigns after ending a 40-year wait for a knockout-stage victory with an impressive win over Ecuador. Javier Aguirre’s men now take on England knowing victory would send El Tri into the quarterfinals, matching their best-ever World Cup performance achieved on home soil in 1970 and 1986.

The United States have also capitalised on home support under Mauricio Pochettino. After cruising through the group stage and overcoming Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32 despite finishing with 10 men, the Americans now face Belgium in Los Angeles.
