In a bold move to protect the integrity of Nigerian football, the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has announced that all Matchday 37 fixtures will kick off simultaneously at 3pm on Sunday, 11 May — a decision widely seen as a proactive measure against potential match-fixing.
The announcement, made by NPFL Chief Operating Officer Davidson Owumi, comes amid growing concerns about transparency in the final stages of the season, with several clubs locked in battles for continental spots and survival from relegation.
“We initially scheduled the trophy presentation match in Ikenne for 3pm due to safety considerations,” Owumi said.
“However, after reviewing all fixtures and the high stakes involved, it became clear that simultaneous kickoffs were necessary to ensure fairness and prevent any possible manipulation of results.”

Although there have been no formal allegations of wrongdoing, the league’s decision to standardize the kickoff times appears to be a precautionary step in safeguarding the sport from undue influence as the season nears its climax.

Sunday’s fixtures are set to be pivotal. Newly crowned champions Remo Stars will host Ikorodu City in a tense South West encounter, with top-three implications for the Oga Boys.
Meanwhile, Abia Warriors will face El-Kanemi Warriors in Umuahia, a crucial clash that will have both continental and relegation ramifications.

In Uyo, Akwa United will battle to avoid relegation as they welcome Bayelsa United for a must-win South-South derby. Elsewhere, relegation contenders Heartland will visit Bendel Insurance in Benin City, with the latter safe from any final-day drama.
