Onyeka: Brentford put Super Eagles workhorse up for sale as clubs circle

Brentford midfielder Frank Onyeka is available for sale or loan during the January transfer window, with the Premier League club open to offers for the Nigeria international.

The 28-year-old is currently on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations, where he has been a key figure for the Super Eagles.

Onyeka played four matches during the tournament but was not involved in Nigeria’s third-place play-off against Egypt, which ended 4-2 on penalties after a goalless draw.

Capped 41 times by Nigeria, Onyeka has scored three international goals and has earned a reputation as a tireless and disciplined presence in midfield.

Frank Onyeka and Kevin Akpoguma, have made waves in the Bundesliga this season, ranking among the league’s top players in key stats areas.

He joined Brentford in July 2021 for an undisclosed fee and made an immediate impact, starting in the club’s first-ever Premier League match, a 2-0 victory over Arsenal on the opening day of the 2021-22 season.

However, consistent minutes have proved difficult to secure. In August 2024, Onyeka moved to Bundesliga side FC Augsburg on a season-long loan, where he made 31 league appearances, more than he had managed across three and a half years in the Premier League.

Back at Brentford this season, Onyeka has featured six times in the Premier League and made three appearances in the EFL Cup, but his long-term future remains unclear.

“I know Frank is keen to play football more regularly than he has and I completely understand that,” said Brentford coach Keith Andrews.

Interest in the midfielder has increased following his performances at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. According to Sky Sports News, Championship sides Birmingham City and Coventry City are among those monitoring his situation.

Spanish club Valencia are also reported to be admirers, with the La Liga side having made contact with Brentford as they explore midfield reinforcements during the window.

When asked about potential further transfer activity, Andrews said the club’s focus remains on the current squad, while leaving the door open to the right opportunity.

“I would rather focus on what I have and focus on my players. I have a lot of belief in my players,” he said.

“Equally, if we feel a deal is right and we could add to the group then we would do that.”
