Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali produced a performance to remember, saving two penalties as the Super Eagles edged past Egypt in a dramatic shootout to claim third place at the Africa Cup of Nations.
The Chippa United shot-stopper was named Man of the Match after denying Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush in the decisive moments, capping a display that further enhanced his reputation as one of Africa’s most dependable goalkeepers.
Speaking after the final whistle, an emotional Nwabali dedicated the award to the nation and thanked supporters for their unwavering backing throughout the tournament.
“To be Man of the Match in a tournament as big as this means a lot to me, ireally appreciate this special award and I dedicate it to my nation. The people have been amazing in their support.”

Nigeria prevailed in the penalty shootout after a tense contest, with Nwabali emerging as the central figure as Egypt’s hopes were dashed from the spot.
Asked about his mindset during the shootout, the goalkeeper insisted there was no elaborate preparation behind his saves.
“I don’t really have a formula when it comes to penalties, my job is simply to help my club or my country in any way I can.
“These boys have tried so hard and when you really want to help your team, it gives everyone a boost. It’s a team effort” he explained.

Despite his decisive contribution, Nwabali said he remains demanding of himself, particularly after what he described as a challenging year both personally and professionally.
“I won’t even talk too much about today’s performance because I feel this is not the level I’m supposed to give to my nation,” he added. “I feel I can still give more. I just want to keep helping the team.”
He also paid tribute to Nigerian supporters who turned out despite difficult weather conditions.
“Without the fans, there is no football,” Nwabali said. “I really want to say thank you to them because it’s not easy coming out to support the team, especially with the weather.”
