Portuguese giants secure Terem Moffi loan following Nice fallout

Super Eagles forward Terem Moffi is set to join Portuguese giants FC Porto, bringing an end to a troubled period at French side OGC Nice.

The 26-year-old has joined the Portuguese club on loan, with Porto holding an option to make the transfer permanent at the end of the season.

Moffi’s departure follows several months of uncertainty in Nice, where he had been excluded from the first-team squad after a confrontation between players and supporters following a Ligue 1 defeat in November.

The striker had not featured for the club since that incident, as relations between the player and the club deteriorated.

Nice officials opened discussions over a January exit, with Moffi keen to restart his career elsewhere after a campaign disrupted by off-field issues and inconsistent form.

He scored two goals in 10 league appearances this season, a sharp contrast to his debut year at the club, when he finished as Nice’s leading scorer following his arrival from Lorient.

Transfer specialist Fabrice Hawkins confirmed that Porto agreed a loan deal that includes a reported €8m purchase option, which is not obligatory.

The Portuguese giants are understood to have beaten competition from several clubs, including Turkey’s Beşiktaş, despite rival offers presenting more lucrative financial terms.

Moffi is said to have been persuaded by Porto’s sporting project and the opportunity to work under head coach Francesco Farioli, who is familiar with the striker from his time in Ligue 1.

Moffi provides immediate attacking reinforcement during a crucial stage of the season, while for the player the move represents a chance to rebuild confidence and consistency away from the spotlight in France.

If the Super Eagles forward impresses, Porto retain the option to make the transfer permanent in the summer.
