Nigeria’s Falconets claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Senegal in the first leg of their third-round qualifier for the 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.
The match played at MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta was tightly contested, with both sides showing discipline and organisation, particularly in defence.
The Falconets dominated possession in the opening exchanges but struggled to convert control into clear chances. Senegal remained compact, closing spaces effectively and frustrating Nigeria’s attacking efforts throughout a cagey first half.
Nigeria suffered a setback shortly before the interval when key forward Janet Akekoromowei was forced off on a stretcher after picking up an injury.

However, the hosts responded positively after the restart and took the lead early in the second half. Chinaza Kindness broke the deadlock with a powerful header from close range, rising above the Senegalese defence to score the game’s only goal.
Senegal increased the pressure in search of an equaliser, committing more players forward as the match progressed. But Nigeria remained composed at the back, showing tactical discipline to deny the visitors clear-cut opportunities.
