Maduka Okoye’s resurgence in Italy gathered further momentum on Sunday as the Udinese goalkeeper registered his 10th Serie A clean sheet of the season in a composed away performance against Cagliari, a display that could further intensify the battle for Nigeria’s number one shirt ahead of upcoming international fixtures.
In a season that began under uncertainty following his betting-related suspension earlier in the campaign, Okoye is steadily rebuilding both form and reputation at Udinese, producing the kind of consistency that is increasingly difficult for Eric Chelle to ignore.
Udinese’s 2-0 victory at Cagliari may ultimately go down as another important result for the Italian side, but much of the attention from a Nigerian perspective centred on Okoye’s authority between the posts.

The 25-year-old finished the contest with three saves, 36 touches and a 7.6 performance rating while helping Udinese secure another clean sheet away from home.
More importantly, it took his overall tally to 10 Serie A clean sheets in just 28 appearances this season an impressive return considering he missed the opening weeks of the campaign during his suspension.
He has now conceded only 30 goals in 28 league matches and remains among the better performing goalkeepers statistically in Italy’s top flight.
Despite playing seven fewer matches than Como goalkeeper Jean Butez, Okoye remains within reach of the division’s leading clean sheet figures and currently sits ninth overall in the Serie A rankings with two games still left to play.

Against Cagliari, the Nigerian goalkeeper was repeatedly called into action, particularly during a tense first half when the hosts pressed aggressively for an opener.
One of his standout moments arrived in the 32nd minute when he produced an excellent reaction save to deny Gianluca Gaetano from close range after a dangerous Cagliari attack inside the six-yard box.
Earlier in the match, he had also reacted sharply to stop efforts from Marco Palestra and later dealt comfortably with late pressure as Cagliari searched desperately for a breakthrough.
His composure in possession also remained evident despite Udinese spending long periods defending. Okoye completed 18 of his 30 passes and continued to show the calm distribution that has become a growing part of his game in Serie A.
The clean sheet further strengthens what has quietly become one of the strongest comeback stories involving a Nigerian player this season.

After being sidelined earlier in the campaign because of betting irregularities involving close associates, Okoye returned to action under scrutiny and admitted he withdrew from Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations squad earlier this year to focus fully on regaining sharpness and rhythm at club level, that decision now appears to be paying off.
His recent performances have already earned him a recall to the Super Eagles squad under Chelle, and his growing consistency arrives at a significant moment for Nigeria’s goalkeeping department.
While Stanley Nwabali remains highly respected after his performances during the 2023 and 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, uncertainty surrounding his club future has reopened conversations around competition for the position.
Nwabali is currently without a club following his departure from Chippa United, while recent transfer talks with Simba SC reportedly collapsed after both parties failed to agree on personal terms.
At the same time, Nigeria’s goalkeeping pool continues to expand, with Arthur Okonkwo recently switching international allegiance from England to Nigeria to add another option for Chelle.
Yet for all the growing competition, Okoye’s recent form may be the most compelling development of all.
