Belgium boss compares FIFA’s Balogun decision to ‘April Fools’ joke

Belgium head coach Rudi Garcia has launched a scathing attack on FIFA after the governing body overturned Folarin Balogun’s one match suspension ahead of his side’s World Cup Round of 16 clash against the United States.

FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee suspended the automatic ban imposed on the American striker following his red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina, allowing him to feature against Belgium after placing the punishment on a one year probationary period.

The decision has sparked outrage within Belgian football, with the Royal Belgian Football Association describing itself as “astonished” and announcing it was exploring every possible avenue following what it considers an unprecedented ruling.

Speaking at his pre match press conference in Seattle, Garcia struggled to hide his disbelief.

“I didn’t know that July 5 was equal to April 1 at FIFA,” the Belgian coach said, comparing the decision to an April Fools’ joke.

Garcia insisted Belgium’s frustration went beyond the immediate impact on his team.

“We’re not defending the national team or federation. We’re defending football,” he said.

“It’s the first time in World Cup history that such a decision is taken.”

Despite his criticism, the former Napoli and Lyon manager attempted to draw a line under the controversy, insisting his attention remained firmly on preparing his players for the knockout encounter.

“I am the head coach. I will focus on my team and tomorrow’s game. Regardless of the 11 starting players from the U.S., I will focus on my team.”

Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois admitted the timing of FIFA’s decision had come as a surprise, although he downplayed its overall impact on Belgium’s preparations.

“Of course it was the day prior to the game, so that was a bit of a surprise,” Courtois said.

“Had it been done earlier, we’d have been able to be more mentally prepared, perhaps.”

The experienced goalkeeper, however, insisted Belgium had prepared for every possible attacking option in the American squad.

“We always prepare for all the possible strikers,” he explained.

“I think Balogun is a very fast striker. Obviously, a different profile than maybe Ricardo Pepi. They are all good strikers.”

Courtois added that Belgium’s coaching staff had already analysed Balogun’s tendencies, including penalty-taking patterns, while also preparing for the attacking threats posed by Christian Pulisic, Sergiño Dest and the rest of the American frontline.

The controversy erupted after FIFA delayed Balogun’s suspension rather than enforcing the mandatory one-match ban that normally follows a straight red card.

Belgium’s football federation responded by issuing a strongly worded statement referencing FIFA’s own disciplinary regulations and confirming it was investigating possible legal options.

The Balogun case has also reignited debate over FIFA’s disciplinary consistency after a similar decision last year allowed Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo to feature despite carrying an outstanding suspension from World Cup qualifying.
