Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has confirmed the Scottish champions are in discussions to bring Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho back to the club, revealing that negotiations with the player’s representatives are already underway.
Iheanacho became a free agent this summer after the expiration of his one year contract, with Celtic initially opting against activating the extension clause in his deal despite the Nigerian’s influential contribution to their domestic double-winning campaign.
The Scottish champions are now looking to secure the 29-year-old’s services on fresh terms, with O’Neill keen to conclude negotiations quickly so the striker can enjoy a full pre-season after an injury disrupted start to life at the club last year.
“I would like to do something with him,” O’Neill said.
“If we can do something relatively quickly, at least he then gets started in pre season, which is really important for him. It is something he did not have last year.
“So that would be nice. I am definitely pursuing that at this minute. He will not be in Portugal with us, but we are talking to his agent now at this moment. I would like to have him.”
The former Leicester City and Sevilla forward played a decisive role during the closing stages of last season, delivering several match winning moments as Celtic retained the league title and lifted the Scottish Cup.

Iheanacho scored crucial goals against Dundee, Hibernian and Motherwell, including a dramatic late penalty that sealed a 3-2 victory over Motherwell. He also found the net in extra time during both the Scottish Cup semi-final against St Mirren and the final against Dunfermline to underline his importance in the club’s successful campaign.
Despite Celtic’s desire to retain the Nigerian international, competition for his signature remains. Turkish side Bursaspor are among the clubs reported to be monitoring his situation following the end of his contract.

O’Neill also confirmed that Celtic are still planning to strengthen their attacking options before the transfer window closes. Colombian forward Camilo Duran is understood to be closing in on a move to the club, but the manager believes keeping Iheanacho would provide another significant boost as the Hoops prepare to defend their domestic titles and compete in Europe next season.
