Just days after uncertainty surrounded the status of Nigeria’s Unity Cup campaign, the tournament has now received official FIFA recognition in a dramatic development that changes everything for Eric Chelle’s debutants.
The Unity Cup has officially been confirmed as a FIFA Tier 1 event ahead of next week’s competition at The Valley in south-east London, ensuring that every appearance made during the tournament will count as a full senior international cap under FIFA regulations.
The announcement comes as a huge boost for several players recently called up by Chelle for the first time, many of whom initially faced the prospect of representing the Super Eagles in matches that would not have been officially recognized.

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has handed late Unity Cup invitations to Yira Sor and Tijani Al-Ameen following a last-minute squad setback.
Earlier concerns had emerged because the tournament falls just before FIFA’s June international window, creating fears that the competition would be treated as an unofficial exhibition event. That uncertainty also raised questions over whether clubs would be obligated to release players for the tournament.
Now, FIFA’s Tier 1 designation has completely altered the landscape.

For players like Chibueze Oputa, Obinna Igboke, Arthur Okonkwo, Owen Oseni, Rafiu Durosinmi and several Nigeria Premier Football League stars handed maiden invitations, the Unity Cup will officially become part of their international careers if they feature for Nigeria.
Chelle had assembled an experimental squad heavily focused on emerging talents, fringe internationals and standout NPFL performers as part of his wider rebuilding plans for the Super Eagles.
The Franco-Malian coach spent recent months scouting talents across Nigeria, attending league matches in cities including Enugu, Lagos, Ibadan and Ikenne before finalizing a squad that included as many as 12 potential debutants.
Among the domestic-based players invited are Michael Atata, Obinna Igboke, Chibueze Oputa, Elias Ochobi, Ayobami Junior and late invitees of Yira Sor and Tijani Al-Ameen while foreign-based newcomers such as Femi Azeez, Philip Otele and Ebenezer Akinsanmiro were also included.

Home based debutants.
This year’s Unity Cup will feature four national teams: Nigeria, Jamaica, India and Zimbabwe competing in a knockout format at Charlton Athletic’s home ground, The Valley.
Nigeria will face Zimbabwe in the opening semi-final on Tuesday, May 26, while Jamaica takes on India a day later. The tournament concludes on Saturday, May 30, with both the third-place playoff and final scheduled for the same venue.
Organisers described the FIFA Tier 1 confirmation as a major milestone for the competition and another important step in strengthening the Unity Cup’s growing international profile.
Beyond football, the tournament also continues its wider objective of celebrating culture, diversity and diaspora communities in London through international sport.
