FIBA Rankings: Nigeria’s D’Tigers drop out of Africa’s top six

Days after Nigeria’s 2025 AfroBasket exit, D’Tigers players are stranded in Abuja amid a flight row with the Nigeria Basketball Federation.

Nigeria’s men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, have dropped 11 places to 53rd in the latest FIBA World Rankings.

The fall comes after their disappointing AfroBasket 2025 campaign, where they exited in the quarter-finals following a 91–75 loss to Senegal, extending their wait for a second continental title.

Ranked 42nd globally and sixth in Africa earlier this year, Nigeria now sit eighth on the continent, behind South Sudan, Angola, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Senegal, Cape Verde, and Tunisia.

D’Tigers will attempt to bounce back in November when they face Tunisia, Guinea, and Rwanda in the opening round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 African Qualifiers.

At the top, the United States remain world number one, while Germany climbed to second following their EuroBasket 2025 victory. Serbia slipped to third, with France and Canada rounding out the top five.
