Didier Deschamps has launched a passionate defense of Kylian Mbappé’s character, rejecting suggestions that the France captain is driven by individual ambition and insisting he has become an exemplary leader whose influence extends well beyond his goals.

Speaking after France’s 2-0 victory over Morocco secured a place in a third consecutive FIFA World Cup semi-final, Deschamps addressed long standing perceptions surrounding his captain, arguing that the public image of Mbappe bears little resemblance to the player he sees every day.

“A lot of people think Kylian Mbappé is a dictator, who only thinks about himself,” Deschamps said.

“He’s someone who, as a captain, is exemplary.”

The France manager made the remarks while explaining why a squad packed with world class talent continues to function so effectively, pointing to Mbappe’s leadership and selflessness as central to the team’s success.

Although Mbappe endured a frustrating first half against Morocco after seeing his penalty saved by Bono, he responded by opening the scoring after the break before Ousmane Dembele wrapped up victory with France’s second goal.

For Deschamps, however, his captain’s greatest contribution was not the decisive strike but the attitude he showed throughout the contest and his willingness to celebrate the achievements of others.

“Kylian was as happy when Ousmane scored as if it was him who had scored,” Deschamps revealed.

The veteran coach believes such moments capture the spirit within the French camp far better than any individual statistic or personal accolade.

He also rejected the notion that managing a dressing room containing some of football’s biggest names inevitably creates tension or rivalry.

Instead, Deschamps described a squad united by a shared commitment to collective success, with Mbappé setting the standard both on and off the pitch.

“They’re all concerned when they’re on the pitch. Even when they’re not, they’re concerned,” he said.

“That’s something I like to have this notion of a group, of a collective interest that comes first.”

Deschamps also paid tribute to Mbappé’s growing legacy with the national team, joking that the forward had overtaken one of his own milestones in a France shirt.

“By the way, he beat my national team record,” the coach said with a smile.

“That’s not nice.”

The light hearted remark reflected the admiration Deschamps has for a player who continues to rewrite France’s record books while embracing greater responsibility as captain.

Mbappé’s performance against Morocco summed up those qualities. Rather than allowing a missed penalty to define his evening, he responded with a superb second half opener before leading by example as France closed out another disciplined victory.

The result extended Les Bleus’ impressive World Cup campaign and moved them within one win of another final, but Deschamps made it clear that his captain’s value cannot be measured solely by goals.
