Iwobi named among Premier League’s most creative players this season

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has earned a place among the Premier League’s top creators this season, according to new figures released by WhoScored.

Iwobi, who has been a central figure for Fulham since his move from Everton two years ago, ranks fifth for chances created in the English top flight. The midfielder has produced 23 key passes so far, making him the only Fulham player in the elite group.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes leads the list, followed by Dominik Szoboszlai, Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson.

A Key Figure at Fulham

Iwobi has grown into one of Fulham’s most reliable performers under Marco Silva. His role from the inside-right position allows him to operate between the lines, link play and pick out dangerous areas with his passing.

Last season was one of the strongest in his Premier League career, recording his highest-ever goal contributions. This campaign, he has added two goals and two assists in 15 appearances, but his wider influence on Fulham’s attacking rhythm continues to stand out.

His creativity remains one of the pillars of Fulham’s play, especially in a side not known for having many high-volume creators.

Why His Super Eagles Form Looks Different

Despite his consistency at club level, Iwobi’s performances for Nigeria often attract criticism from fans. His national-team role is one of the biggest reasons for that contrast.

At Fulham, the 29-year-old plays closer to the final third, where he has fewer defensive duties and more freedom to dictate attacking moves. For the Super Eagles, he is usually deployed deeper in central midfield, responsible for controlling tempo, building from the back and making defensive recoveries.

That positional shift reduces his influence around the opponent’s box the area where he is most effective.

The physical nature of African football also plays a part. Against powerful, energetic midfields, Iwobi has sometimes struggled to find the same space and influence he enjoys at club level. The recent match against DR Congo was another reminder of the challenge he faces in continental games.

Looking Ahead to AFCON 2025

With the Africa Cup of Nations approaching, Iwobi is expected to take up a similar deeper role for Nigeria. Despite the criticism he receives, he remains a trusted member of the squad and one of the most technically gifted players available to the coaching staff.
