Mbappe-Paraguay row explained: How World Cup clash sparked racism storm and apology demand

France star Kylian Mbappe, Paraguay senator Celeste Amarilla and the French Football Federation have become embroiled in a heated racism row following France's World Cup victory over Paraguay. Here's how the controversy unfolded.

The fallout from France’s World Cup last-16 victory over Paraguay has developed into one of the tournament’s biggest off field controversies, with France captain Kylian Mbappe, Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla, the French Football Federation (FFF) and even Paraguay’s government becoming involved.

What began as a fiercely contested knockout match has escalated into accusations of racism, threats of legal action and diplomatic intervention.

The match that started it all

France edged Paraguay 1-0 in a bruising World Cup last-16 encounter, with Mbappe scoring the winning goal from the penalty spot to send the European champions into the quarterfinals.

The match itself was highly physical and emotionally charged. After the final whistle, Mbappe appeared to walk past Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill without acknowledging what Amarilla later described as a customary post match handshake.

Although there has been no suggestion that the incident was deliberate, it quickly became the center of an escalating dispute.

Senator’s controversial comments

Soon after the match, Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla launched a series of personal attacks against Mbappe on social media.

Among her remarks, she referred to the France captain as a “colonised Cameroonian desperately trying to pass himself off as French” while also calling him “resentful, arrogant and ugly.”

In another post, Amarilla mocked Mbappe’s education and background and claimed Paraguay’s players should have confronted him after the match.

French Football Federation steps in

The French Football Federation swiftly condemned Amarilla’s remarks, describing them as “utterly abhorrent and unacceptable.”

The federation announced it had referred the matter to the public prosecutor with a view to legal proceedings, insisting the comments were racist and criminal.

The FFF also pledged its full support to Mbappe and reiterated its commitment to fighting racism and discrimination in football.

It stressed that France’s national team represents the country and that attacks on its players amount to attacks on France itself.

Mbappe then issued a strongly worded public response, accusing Amarilla of “blatant racism.”

The Real Madrid forward described the senator as “a despicable woman, unworthy of her position.”

He also argued that her comments had overshadowed Paraguay’s impressive World Cup campaign.

“You do not represent Paraguay,” Mbappe wrote. “Because of your thoughtlessness and your blatant racism, the whole world has already forgotten the historic journey and effort your players made during this World Cup.”

The France captain vowed never to allow people to spread hatred and racism without challenge.

The Paraguay government distances itself from the controversy

Paraguay’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs released an official statement distancing the country’s government from Amarilla’s remarks.

Authorities said they “deplore and reject” the comments because they run contrary to Paraguay’s commitment to respect, peaceful coexistence and human dignity.

The government also emphasized that Amarilla’s statements reflected only her personal views and did not represent either Paraguay or its people.

Senator demands apology

Rather than backing down, Amarilla responded with another lengthy statement in which she defended her original comments.

She accused Mbappe of showing disrespect to goalkeeper Orlando Gill after the match and insisted that failing to acknowledge the goalkeeper reflected arrogance rather than sportsmanship.

Amarilla also demanded that Mbappe apologies for describing her as “despicable” and “unworthy” of holding public office.

“I will not tolerate your abuse,” she wrote. “You do not know me, you have no idea who I am, and you have no right to say that I am a despicable woman, unworthy of the office I hold.”

The senator further warned that if Mbappe failed to retract his statement, she could pursue legal action, claiming his comments amounted to gender-based violence.

A controversy still unfolding

With France preparing for the World Cup quarterfinals, attention remains fixed on a dispute that has moved well beyond football.

What started with a hard-fought knockout victory has developed into an international controversy involving allegations of racism, official government statements, possible legal proceedings and a fresh public demand from Amarilla for an apology from one of football’s biggest stars.
