The Nigeria National League (NNL) is heading into the 2026/2027 campaign with renewed backing for a player welfare initiative that has increasingly become part of the competition’s matchday experience, as the league looks to strengthen its appeal across the country’s second tier.
The league has extended its partnership with Locker Room Bonus, supported by betPawa, for another season, retaining a programme designed to ensure players and technical staff receive financial rewards for victories without having to wait for lengthy administrative processes.
The arrangement covers all 34 participating clubs across the league’s four conferences, with eligible squad members and members of the technical crew receiving their match win bonuses directly on their mobile phones through mobile money.
Payments are processed before they leave the dressing room, bringing an immediate reward to the people responsible for delivering results on the pitch.
However, the scale of the renewed commitment provides a clearer picture of how much the initiative has grown. The partnership carries a total seasonal value of up to N496.9m, covering direct match win bonus payments, operational and promotional support, as well as an N8m fund reserved for recognising outstanding individual players and clubs at the end of the campaign.
The renewal follows a substantial first season of implementation. During the 2025/2026 regular season and Super Four tournament, the programme processed more than 5,000 direct mobile transactions worth N289.7m.

Beyond the financial figures, the payment structure is intended to eliminate administrative bottlenecks and ensure players receive equal bonus amounts across both the men’s and women’s competitions.
By sending payments directly to recipients, the initiative also seeks to reduce delays and improve transparency in the distribution of match-winning rewards.
NNL Chief Operating Officer Danlami Alanana believes the programme has already made a noticeable difference to the competitive atmosphere within the division, encouraging players and coaches to raise their standards.
He explained that the prospect of immediate financial rewards has increased the motivation to win, with teams showing greater determination to secure positive results.
“It has also made the league very competitive. Everybody wants to win and therefore, you see there’s an enhancement of performance by the players. The coaches are also putting in their best to ensure that their team wins. So it has brought in so much competition among the players,” Alanana said.
The partnership is a broader commitment to recognizing athletes and ensuring that financial support reaches those who contribute to the game, regardless of where they compete.
Nii Ashong Katai, Regional Manager for West and Southern Africa at betPawa, described athlete welfare as a central consideration behind the company’s involvement in the programme.
“Athlete welfare is central to betPawa. Through the Locker Room Bonus, we’re recognizing athletes’ efforts and extending direct support to more players, wherever they compete,” Katai stated.
The financial framework is backed by identity verification and payment infrastructure through pawaPass and pawaPay, which are designed to ensure that bonuses reach the intended recipients securely and without unnecessary complications.

With the 2026/2027 NNL season scheduled to begin on November 1, the renewed agreement offers another opportunity to strengthen player welfare while improving the competitive environment across the country’s second-tier competition.
The challenge now will be to build on the previous season’s delivery and ensure that the programme’s financial commitment continues to translate into meaningful support for players and clubs throughout the campaign.
