Maduka Okoye endured another difficult afternoon as Udinese suffered home defeat to AS Roma in Serie A on Saturday, October 31, a result that comes at an uncomfortable time for the Nigerian goalkeeper with the Super Eagles preparing for their return to 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying action.
Roma were ruthless at the Bluenergy Stadium, scoring four times before half-time to take control of a contest that eventually produced seven goals. Although Udinese responded with two goals after the break, the visitors added a fifth in stoppage time to complete a convincing victory.
For Okoye, the result raises fresh questions about his club form and the implications it could have for his international prospects.
Nigeria’s next assignment is a double-header against Tanzania in November, with the national team needing positive results to strengthen its position in Group L. The goalkeeper’s place in Eric Chelle’s plans will therefore attract attention as the selection debate returns.
Udinese had barely settled into the contest when Roma took the lead in the 10th minute. Bryan Cristante rose to meet a delivery from Wesley Franca and directed his header into the net.
Okoye was called into action again as Roma continued to create opportunities. The Nigerian made an important intervention to deny Donyell Malen from close range after the Dutch forward had found space inside the penalty area.
But the visitors were not finished. Malen struck the crossbar after Okoye had initially kept out his effort, before Rodrigo Mora doubled Roma’s advantage in the 31st minute.
Malen made it 3–0 three minutes later, finishing after receiving a well-timed pass, and Evan Ndicka compounded Udinese’s misery with a header from Matias Soulé’s corner in the 37th minute.
Four goals inside the opening 37 minutes had left the home side facing an almost impossible task.

Udinese showed more determination after the interval. Nicolo Zaniolo pulled one back in the 50th minute after a rebound fell favourably for him, while Matteo Palma reduced the deficit further in the 78th minute with a low finish following a pass into the penalty area.
However, Roma remained in control and Daniele Ghilardi added a fifth in the 90th minute, meeting a precise cross and finishing into the top-right corner.
The final whistle confirmed a 5–2 defeat for Udinese, leaving Okoye to reflect on an afternoon in which his team’s defensive organisation was repeatedly exposed.
It would be unfair to place the entire responsibility for the result on the goalkeeper. Roma created several high-quality opportunities, Udinese’s defensive structure repeatedly failed to contain their movement, and Okoye produced notable saves during the match.
Nevertheless, conceding five goals in a home defeat is not the kind of outcome that strengthens a goalkeeper’s case for an important international assignment.
A difficult run beyond the Roma defeat
The result also adds to a challenging opening period for Udinese in the 2026/27 Serie A campaign.
Before the Roma encounter, Okoye had featured in league defeats against Lazio, Inter Milan, Cagliari, Torino, Lecce and AC Milan. Udinese also suffered a 5–3 defeat against Inter, while their 0–0 draw away to Parma on October 28 offered a brief reminder of the goalkeeper’s ability to keep opponents out.
The Parma result was particularly important because it provided one of his clean sheets in the league campaign. However, the broader picture has been difficult, with Udinese struggling to turn individual performances into consistent defensive results.
The Roma game brings another heavy defeat into that sequence.
For a goalkeeper competing for a place in a national team, club form is an important part of the selection conversation. Okoye’s situation is particularly significant because Nigeria have more than one goalkeeper with a claim to the position.

Okoye’s international situation makes the timing of Saturday’s result even more interesting.
The Udinese goalkeeper was part of Nigeria’s squad during the September 2026 AFCON qualifying matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau, but he did not feature in either game.
Stanley Nwabali started both encounters, keeping his place between the posts as Nigeria opened the campaign with a 2–1 victory over Madagascar in Uyo before suffering a damaging 3–0 defeat away to Guinea-Bissau.
Okoye was therefore an unused substitute during the first two qualifying matches, while Nwabali had the opportunity to establish himself as Chelle’s preferred choice in competitive action.
The last time Okoye started a Super Eagles match was during the June international friendlies, when Nigeria faced Poland and Portugal.
He was in goal for the 2–2 draw against Poland in Warsaw on June 3. Nigeria took the lead through Terem Moffi before the hosts equalized shortly before half time. Paul Onuachu restored Nigeria’s advantage from the penalty spot in the second half, but Przemysław Wiśniewski struck in stoppage time to secure a draw.
Okoye also started against Portugal on June 10, when the Super Eagles lost 2–1. Akor Adams scored Nigeria’s goal, while Pedro Neto and Francisco Conceição found the net for the European side.
Earlier in March, he had also featured in Nigeria’s 2–1 friendly victory over Iran.
Those three matches represent his international appearances in 2026 before the September qualifiers. His presence in the squad during the latest qualifying window showed that he remained within Chelle’s consideration, but Nwabali’s selection for both competitive fixtures underlined the competition he faces.
November offers another test for Okoye
The Super Eagles return to AFCON qualifying action during the November international window with two matches against Tanzania.
Nigeria are scheduled to host the Taifa Stars at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on November 13 before travelling to Dar es Salaam for the return fixture on November 17.
The double-header carries considerable importance for Chelle’s side.
Nigeria began their Group L campaign with a 2–1 home victory over Madagascar, but the 3–0 defeat in Guinea-Bissau left them with work to do. With Tanzania also in the group, the Super Eagles cannot afford another damaging result as they attempt to strengthen their qualification position.
The November fixtures will also provide another opportunity for Chelle to assess his goalkeeping options.
Nwabali has been the first choice in the opening two qualifiers, while Okoye’s recent international starts came in friendlies. The situation leaves the Udinese goalkeeper with an important opportunity to improve his case before the next squad selection.
His club performances will inevitably form part of that assessment, particularly as the competition for the position remains open.

The goalkeeping debate is not simply about one goalkeeper having a difficult afternoon and another automatically becoming the preferred choice.
Nwabali has his own performances to answer for, especially after Nigeria’s defeat in Guinea-Bissau. But his selection in both September qualifiers gives him a competitive advantage in terms of recent involvement with the national team.
Okoye, meanwhile, has experience at the highest level and has previously demonstrated his ability to perform for Nigeria. His three starts in the 2026 friendlies also show that he has remained part of the national team picture under Chelle.
However, the challenge now is to turn that consideration into a stronger claim for the starting position.
Saturday’s defeat against Roma does not automatically rule him out of the November squad, nor does it mean that Chelle has made a final decision about his preferred goalkeeper. But it does provide another difficult result for the Nigerian to overcome as he attempts to regain the position.
With two important AFCON qualifiers approaching, Okoye will need his performances at Udinese to improve if he is to put pressure on Nwabali and convince the Super Eagles coach that he should be trusted between the posts.
The November matches could offer another opportunity to change the conversation. For now, however, the five goals conceded against Roma have made his task more complicated.
