Coventry City strengthened their Premier League survival hopes with a 3-1 victory over Sunderland, but beyond the important points gained, Saturday’s encounter provided another memorable moment in Taiwo Awoniyi’s eventful week.
Frank Lampard’s side went into the contest 19th in the table, with Sunderland bottom, making the meeting particularly important for both clubs. The victory lifted Coventry to 15th, four points clear of their opponents, and extended their impressive record against the Black Cats to just one defeat in their last 13 meetings.
The hosts took the lead in the 17th minute after Trai Hume’s misplaced clearance fell invitingly to Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, who swept a first-time effort into the bottom left corner for his first goal of the season
Sunderland had an opportunity to respond almost immediately, but Brian Brobbey dragged his effort wide after finding himself through on goal against Carl Rushworth.
That miss proved costly as Coventry doubled their advantage eight minutes before half-time. Luke O’Nien lost possession to Awoniyi around 40 yards from goal, allowing the Nigerian striker to drive towards the penalty area before firing an effort that took a deflection and beat Robin Roefs.
It was Awoniyi’s first Premier League goal of the season and his first in Coventry colors, providing another highlight in a week already filled with personal recognition.
The striker had recently received the PFA Beyond the Pitch Award at the 2026 Best of Africa Awards for his charitable work through the Taiwo Awoniyi Foundation and support for grassroots football.
Coventry carried their momentum into the second half, extending their lead in the 52nd minute. Jack Rudoni collected Victor Torp’s pass before shooting from around 20 yards, with his effort taking a significant deflection off Omar Alderete to leave Roefs stranded.

Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris responded with attacking substitutions, and his side gradually increased the pressure. Their efforts produced a breakthrough in the 67th minute when VAR recommended an on-field review after Ethan Pinnock appeared to handle the ball inside the penalty area. Referee Simon Hooper awarded a spot kick, which Enzo Le Fee converted to make it 3-1.
The visitors threatened further, but Brobbey wasted another opportunity with a header over the crossbar. Awoniyi, meanwhile, was withdrawn in the 72nd minute for Brandon Thomas-Asante after making his decisive contribution.
The Nigerian finished with one shot on target from his only attempt, five accurate passes from nine and five successful duels from 12. Although he had only 18 touches, his goal underlined his ability to make an impact without needing extensive involvement in possession.
Coventry had to withstand a difficult closing spell as Sunderland searched for a way back. Caleb Yirenkyi fired narrowly over in the 88th minute, while Rushworth produced an important save to deny Wilson Isidor in stoppage time.

Sunderland’s hopes of a late comeback suffered another setback when Alderete received a second yellow card in the 90th minute, leaving the visitors with 10 men. Coventry survived nine minutes of added time to secure their third league victory in five matches.
The result moved Lampard’s team up to 15th and opened a four-point gap over Sunderland, offering a valuable boost to their survival campaign.
