Osimhen’s ex-club appoint Massimiliano Allegri after Milan exit

Napoli have appointed former Juventus and AC Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri on a four-year contract, marking the start of a new chapter at Victor Osimhen's former club.

Napoli have ushered in another new chapter following the Victor Osimhen era after appointing former Juventus and AC Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri as their new head coach on a contract running until June 30, 2029.

The Italian champions confirmed the appointment on Friday, handing one of the country’s most successful coaches the task of returning the club to the summit of Serie A after another summer of transition.

Allegri arrives in Naples boasting one of the most decorated managerial records in Italian football, having won six Serie A titles and four domestic doubles across celebrated spells with Juventus and AC Milan.

His appointment comes as Napoli continue rebuilding following the departure of Osimhen, whose goals inspired the club’s historic 2022/23 Scudetto triumph before his exit marked the end of one of the most successful periods in the club’s modern history.

The 58-year-old joins Napoli after a disappointing second spell at Milan ended abruptly in May. His return to San Siro lasted just one season before the club dismissed him following a dramatic collapse in form during the closing weeks of the campaign.

Milan’s hopes of securing UEFA Champions League qualification evaporated after a 2-1 home defeat to Cagliari consigned the Rossoneri to a fifth-place finish, prompting the club’s American owners, RedBird Capital Partners, to describe the season as an “unequivocal failure.”

Allegri’s departure formed part of a wider overhaul at Milan, with senior executives Giorgio Furlani, Igli Tare and Geoffrey Moncada also leaving the club as the hierarchy sought a fresh direction.

Despite challenging for the Serie A title for much of the campaign, Milan won only one of their final four league matches, a collapse that ultimately cost Allegri his job.

Napoli moved swiftly to secure his signature following the departure of Antonio Conte, who stepped down despite guiding the Partenopei to a second-place finish behind champions Inter Milan.

Allegri now inherits a squad expected to undergo further changes before the start of the new campaign, with Napoli hoping his experience, tactical discipline and proven record of winning trophies can restore the consistency needed to challenge for domestic honors once again.
