Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu has declared that Nigeria’s objectives at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations are straightforward successfully defend the continental title and secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Speaking ahead of Nigeria’s Group C opener against Malawi in Morocco, Madugu said the team arrived at the tournament with a clear purpose and full belief in their ability to achieve both goals.
“We are here for the defence of the WAFCON trophy and the team is fully ready and set to go,” Madugu told reporters.
The Super Falcons enter the competition as Africa’s most successful women’s national team, having won the title a record 10 times. They also begin the tournament among the favourites to lift the trophy once again.
While acknowledging the expectations that come with Nigeria’s pedigree, Madugu insisted his players remain focused on the task ahead rather than external pressure.
“We have a focus, we have a target, and we know what we really want to achieve,” he said.
“We are here to ensure that we qualify for the World Cup as well as retain the trophy we won last year.
Madugu warns against complacency
Madugu also dismissed suggestions that Malawi’s status as tournament debutants makes them easier opponents, insisting every team that earned qualification deserved respect.
“Every team that qualifies for this tournament deserves commendation and a lot of respect,” he said.
“Yes, they are debutants, but they are a very good side. We don’t take anything for granted. Everybody is coming here with a purpose and a mission, so you don’t undermine or underestimate what anybody can do.”

The coach added that the Super Falcons would remain focused on executing their own plans rather than worrying about reputations.
“We have huge respect for all our opponents. We will stick to our game plan and our mission.”
Nigeria begin their campaign against Malawi before facing Zambia and Egypt in Group C. With WAFCON 2026 also serving as Africa’s qualification tournament for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Madugu’s side will be aiming to make a winning start as they pursue a record-extending 11th continental title.
