Chelsea are exploring a move to sign Brighton & Hove Albion striker Danny Welbeck, according to a report by The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
The experienced forward has emerged as a target for the Stamford Bridge club as they assess options to strengthen their attack ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Welbeck, 35, has 12 months remaining on his contract at Brighton after triggering a one-year extension earlier this year. Brighton are aware of Chelsea’s interest, although discussions remain at an early stage.
Ornstein reports that Welbeck’s qualities on and off the pitch have made him an attractive option for Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso. The former England international’s experience, leadership and professionalism are understood to be key reasons behind the club’s interest, with optimism among the parties involved that a deal could eventually be reached despite negotiations being in their early phases.
The move would represent a shift in Chelsea’s recent recruitment strategy, which has largely focused on signing younger players with long-term potential. Welbeck would instead offer proven Premier League experience and leadership in a squad that has undergone significant changes in recent seasons.
Chelsea’s interest also comes as uncertainty surrounds several of the club’s attacking options. The Athletic reports that the Blues are prepared to listen to offers for Liam Delap and Emmanuel Emegha, while Marc Guiu is expected to leave either on loan or in a permanent transfer.
Nicolas Jackson has also returned following a loan spell at Bayern Munich but was not included in Chelsea’s pre-season tour squad to Australia, adding to speculation over his future.

Welbeck enjoyed another productive campaign with Brighton in 2025-26, continuing the strong form that earned him a contract extension until the summer of 2027. He also remained an important figure in Fabian Hürzeler’s squad as Brighton competed for European qualification during the second half of the season.
Since joining Brighton on a free transfer in 2020, Welbeck has established himself as one of the club’s most influential senior players. Injuries affected parts of his early spell on the south coast, but he has become a consistent performer and a respected presence in the dressing room.
Before moving to Brighton, Welbeck represented Manchester United, Arsenal and Watford during a career that has included domestic and European football at the highest level. He also earned more than 40 senior caps for England and featured at major international tournaments.
