Former Nigeria defender Sam Sodje says Benjamin Fredrick should consider leaving Brentford if he cannot secure regular first-team football, after a knee injury ruled the 20-year-old out of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Fredrick, on loan at FCV Dender, picked up the injury during training and has returned to Brentford for rehabilitation. His absence is a blow for Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle, who had identified the young centre-back as part of his defensive plans for Morocco.

Sodje told Footy Africa the setback was “painful” for both the player and the national team, but said the defender must prioritise his development once he recovers.

“He has all the attributes to be a top defender,” Sodje said. “Wherever he can go and get games, I think he should go. If Brentford can’t guarantee opportunities, he needs to look elsewhere.”

Fredrick has won seven senior caps and is regarded as one of Nigeria’s most promising defenders. He is expected to return from injury after the AFCON tournament, with his long-term future at Brentford likely to be assessed in the summer.
