Super Eagles midfielder Christantus Uche has described his serious knee injury as one of the toughest moments of his career after medical tests confirmed a setback expected to keep him out for the entire 2026/27 season.
The 23-year-old suffered the injury during Getafe’s pre-season friendly against Monaco after a heavy challenge from Christian Mawissa left him needing to be carried from the pitch on a stretcher.
Initial examinations suggested severe bruising around the joint, but subsequent medical tests revealed a much more serious problem.
According to Diario AS, an MRI scan showed multiple injuries to Uche’s right knee, including significant damage to the ligaments and meniscus. He is expected to undergo surgery in the coming days, beginning what could be a lengthy rehabilitation process.
The timing makes the setback particularly painful because he had returned to Getafe with hopes of making a fresh start after a difficult loan spell at Crystal Palace.
He was expected to work his way into José Bordalás’ plans, play more regularly in Spain and rebuild the momentum that had seen him emerge as a player of interest to the Super Eagles. Those ambitions have now been put on hold.

Uche has now broken his silence, admitting that coming to terms with the injury has been particularly difficult because of what football means to him.
“Today is one of the toughest days of my career,” Uche wrote on Instagram.
The midfielder said further medical examinations had confirmed the seriousness of the injury and that he now faces a long period away from competitive football.
“Following the latest medical tests, it has been confirmed that my knee injury is serious and that I face a long recovery process.”
The reality of spending months away from the game has clearly weighed heavily on Uche, who had been hoping to use the new season as an opportunity to re-establish himself after his spell in England.
“I won’t lie: accepting that I will be sidelined for a while is hard. Football is my passion, my job, and what makes me happiest, and now I have to face a situation I never imagined.”
Yet the Nigerian has refused to allow the setback to define the next chapter of his career. Instead, he has pledged to approach rehabilitation with patience and determination.
“But challenges are part of the journey, too. I am going to face this period with strength, patience, and determination, working every day to get back to doing what I love most: playing football.”

After finding regular football difficult to secure during his time at Crystal Palace, the return to Getafe offered him an opportunity to rebuild his career in familiar surroundings. He had hoped to convince Bordalás that he could play a more prominent role while continuing to develop his reputation in Spain.
Instead, the focus has abruptly shifted from football to rehabilitation.
Uche also took time to acknowledge the support he has received since suffering the injury, thanking his family, teammates, coaches, medical staff and everyone connected with Getafe.
“I want to thank my family, my teammates, the coaching staff, the medical team, and the entire Getafe CF family from the bottom of my heart for standing by me.”
He also expressed his appreciation to supporters who reached out after learning the extent of his injury.
“And a special thanks to all the fans who have sent me messages of support.”

The setback is not only significant for Uche’s club career. It also comes as Nigeria prepares for another phase of international competition.
Uche has already earned three senior caps for the Super Eagles and had been viewed as a midfielder capable of offering versatility and energy to Nigeria’s squad.
His injury will therefore remove one option from Eric Chelle’s plans as the Super Eagles prepare for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
