Didier Drogba responded with gratitude after learning he is still regarded as a “cult hero” in Nigeria, with the Chelsea legend visibly touched during a surprise live phone call initiated by Victor Osimhen.
The emotional exchange came after Osimhen contacted the former Ivory Coast captain to settle a debate over his Chelsea goalscoring record. Once Drogba confirmed the answer, veteran broadcaster Frank Edoho took the opportunity to deliver a heartfelt message on behalf of Nigerian football fans.
“I’m a Chelsea fan,” Edoho told Drogba.
“Let me tell you, Nigeria, you are a cult hero. Everybody looks up to you. They still remember you.
“So I want to say thank you for what you do.”
The words drew a warm response from Drogba, who thanked Edoho before reflecting on the lasting impact African football icons can have on the next generation.
“The legacy continues for these guys,” Drogba said.
“That’s why I’m so proud.”

Drogba responded simply: “Thank you.”
Osimhen, who had introduced Drogba as someone who is “like a father” to him, smiled throughout the exchange as those around him applauded the Chelsea great.
