World Cup Qualifiers

DR Congo eye first World Cup since 1974 as Mpasi outlines ambition

Goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi says qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026 would be “historic” for DR Congo national football team as they stand one match away from ending a 52-year absence.

The Leopards last appeared at the global finals in 1974 then competing as Zaire and have not returned since. Victory in their upcoming play-off final would secure a place at the expanded 48-team tournament to be staged across the United States, Mexico and Canada.

“Playing in the World Cup after 52 years would be historic for the country, as a player, it would be the pinnacle of my career.”

DR Congo must overcome either Jamaica national football team or New Caledonia national football team in the decisive play-off on 31 March to book their place.

Despite being ranked higher than both potential opponents, Mpasi warned against complacency, referencing previous narrow defeats.

“It’s inevitably going to be tough. Anything can happen on the pitch, it will be decided by small details.”

Under head coach Sébastien Desabre, DR Congo have taken a difficult route to the brink of qualification, narrowly missing out on automatic progression before advancing through the play-offs.

They eliminated both Cameroon national football team and Nigeria national football team to reach the final stage.

“You always have to believe, we knew the path would be difficult, not impossible.”

The goalkeeper, who plays for Le Havre also acknowledged competition for places in the squad but said he remains ready when called upon.

“It’s a great challenge for me. I work hard every day so I am prepared,” he said.
