Ivory Coast qualify for the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup for the very first time after beating Curacao 2-0 thanks to a brace by Nicolas Pepe.
Curacao nearly stunned the favorites inside two minutes when Tahith Chong danced into shooting range and unleashed a fierce effort that forced Yahia Fofana into an excellent save. It proved to be an early warning rather than the beginning of sustained pressure.
Ivory Coast responded with the authority after settling into possession, the breakthrough arrived in the seventh minute. Yan Diomande, once again one of Ivory Coast’s brightest attacking outlets, slipped an intelligent pass into the path of Nicolas Pepe, who kept his composure before drilling a low finish beyond Eloy Room to hand the Elephants a priceless early advantage.
Curacao, needing victory to keep their knockout hopes alive, were forced to abandon their cautious approach. Jurien Gaari came close with a powerful strike that flashed narrowly wide, while Juninho Bacuna continued to probe from midfield, but Ivory Coast’s reshuffled defence remained organised.

The Elephants looked far more threatening whenever they ventured forward.
Amad Diallo twice went close, first curling narrowly wide before seeing another promising move break down inside the area. Franck Kessie almost doubled the lead after another dangerous delivery from Diomande caused confusion inside the Curacao penalty area, while Nicolas Pepe continued to trouble the Blue Wave defence with his intelligent movement.
Although Curacao enjoyed brief spells of possession, they struggled to create clear openings.
Leandro Bacuna produced their best chance of the first half after bursting into the area in stoppage time, only to guide his effort inches wide of the near post as Ivory Coast preserved their slender lead heading into the interval.

The decisive moment arrived in the 64th minute. Ibrahim Sangare threaded a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Pepe, who timed his run to perfection before rifling an unstoppable finish into the top left corner to complete his brace and effectively end Curacao’s hopes of producing one final miracle.
The second goal allowed Ivory Coast to manage the closing stages with confidence.
Emerse Fae refreshed his side with the introductions of Elye Wahi, Oumar Diakite, Bazoumana Toure and Jean Seri, while Curacao continued searching for a consolation through substitutes Jeremy Antonisse, Tyrese Noslin and Gervane Kastaneer.

Tahith Chong forced another comfortable save from Fofana, while Noslin tested the goalkeeper from long range deep into stoppage time, but Curacao’s efforts lacked the cutting edge needed to trouble an increasingly assured Ivorian defence.
At the opposite end, Eloy Room prevented the scoreline from becoming heavier with an excellent late stop to deny Elye Wahi after another flowing Ivory Coast attack.
When Glenn Nyberg brought proceedings to an end after seven minutes of added time, jubilant celebrations erupted among the Ivory Coast players.
