Patrice Motsepe's World Cup celebrations quickly turned into disappointment as he watched his native South Africa suffer a heartbreaking stoppage-time defeat to Canada in the Round of 32.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe’s day at the 2026 FIFA World Cup began with a message of celebration for African football. It ended with the painful sight of his own nation crashing out in heartbreaking fashion.

Just hours before kick-off, Motsepe praised Africa’s remarkable showing at the expanded tournament after nine of the continent’s 10 representatives reached the Round of 32, the best collective performance by African nations in World Cup history.

South Africa were among those teams, joining Algeria, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, DR Congo, Egypt, Ghana, Morocco and Senegal in advancing beyond the group stage.

Speaking on behalf of CAF’s 54 member associations, Motsepe hailed the achievement as a landmark moment for African football.

“On behalf of the CAF Member Associations that represent 54 African countries, I would like to express our heartfelt congratulations to the players and technical teams for their hard-earned and well-deserved qualification.

“The players and technical teams have made each of their countries proud and have also made the 1.6 billion people on the African continent and in the diaspora proud.”

He added that the performances are evidence of “global competitiveness and world class quality of African football” on the biggest stage.

But football offered a cruel reminder of its unpredictability later in the day.

Bafana Bafana frustrated the Canadians for almost the entire contest, with captain Ronwen Williams producing another series of outstanding saves to keep the tie level.

Extra time appeared inevitable. Instead, disaster struck deep into stoppage time.

A loose ball fell invitingly to Stephen Eustáquio on the edge of the area, and the Canadian midfielder rifled a low finish beyond Williams in the 92nd minute to seal a dramatic 1-0 victory and send Canada into the Round of 16.

The late winner shattered South Africa’s hopes of extending what had already become the nation’s greatest World Cup campaign.

Although Bafana Bafana bowed out, their journey still represented a significant milestone. Hugo Broos guided South Africa to the knockout rounds for the first time in the country’s history after overcoming an opening defeat to Mexico with a draw against Czech Republic and a crucial victory over South Korea.

After celebrating a historic achievement for African football as a whole, he was left to witness the end of his own country’s dream from the stands.
