Jesse Marsch reveals the powerful message that left Canada’s dressing room speechless

Jesse Marsch has revealed why he called his players "Canadian heroes" after their dramatic World Cup victory over South Africa and what the emotional speech meant for the country's football future.

Jesse Marsch has revealed the emotional message he delivered to his players moments after Canada secured the nation’s greatest-ever FIFA World Cup victory, explaining why he described them as “Canadian heroes” following their dramatic triumph over South Africa.

Stephen Eustáquio’s stoppage-time winner sealed a historic 1-0 victory that sent the co-hosts into the Round of 16 for the first time, sparking emotional celebrations on the pitch.

Television cameras captured Marsch gathering his squad immediately after the final whistle before telling them they had become “Canadian heroes” a message that quickly resonated with supporters across the country.

Speaking afterwards, the Canadian coach explained why he felt it was important to address the players before they dispersed for media duties.

“People like to say it’s performative to meet on the pitch. Frankly, I don’t give a **** what people have to say,” Marsch said.

“All I care about is our own team and what we do together.”

The former Leeds United and RB Leipzig manager said post match moments often disappear quickly as players are pulled in different directions, making it essential to seize the opportunity while everyone was still together.

“In these moments it’s hard because after the game everybody gets pulled in a million different directions by media and you don’t really have a chance to be with your team unless you take that moment right there.

“At different times we’ve shared messages with each other. I always try to get the leaders to speak because, again, they’re Canadian. This is their national team.”

Marsch said Sunday’s victory represented far more than qualification for the next round, believing it could inspire a new generation of football supporters and players across the country.

“I wanted to be able to voice to them how important a moment this will prove to be for the sport in the country, for the national team programme.

“It’s a shame we couldn’t do it in Vancouver, right in front of our fans.”

Despite playing their knockout fixture in the United States rather than on Canadian soil, Marsch believes the achievement will still leave a lasting impact back home.

“I think you saw the character of the team, the quality of the team, the mentality of the team, the togetherness of the team.

“It’s a pleasure to be their coach and the responsibility I feel to them specifically is what motivates me every day to try to prepare and create a platform for them to be their greatest.”

The American concluded by saying his players had fully embraced that opportunity against South Africa.

“I think they did that today.”

Canada’s reward is a Round of 16 clash against either Morocco or the Netherlands as Marsch’s side continue their remarkable World Cup journey, carrying with them the belief that they have already inspired a nation.
