‘We Want to Inspire a Nation’ – Jesse Marsch Eyes Even Bigger World Cup Shock

Jesse Marsch believes Canada's historic FIFA World Cup run is only just beginning, insisting his side now have nothing to lose against either Morocco or the Netherlands after reaching the Round of 16 for the first time.

Canada head coach Jesse Marsch believes his side have earned the right to dream even bigger after reaching the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, declaring his team are ready to test themselves against one of football’s traditional heavyweights.

Stephen Eustáquio’s dramatic stoppage-time winner secured a historic 1-0 victory over South Africa, sending the co-hosts into the knockout stages for the first time in their history.

Instead of celebrating simply reaching the last 16, Marsch immediately turned his attention to what lies ahead, with Canada set to face either Morocco or the Netherlands.

The American coach insisted his ambition from the start of the tournament was to lead Canada into matches against the world’s elite.

“My goal in this tournament, apart from inspiring our nation, was to make a run so that we could get to see one of the giants of the world,” Marsch said after the victory.

Jesse Marsch believes Canada’s historic FIFA World Cup run is only just beginning, insisting his side now have nothing to lose against either Morocco or the Netherlands after reaching the Round of 16 for the first time.

He described Morocco as one of football’s emerging global powers following their remarkable rise over recent years, while praising the Netherlands’ long-standing pedigree on the international stage.

“Given Morocco’s last six years, I think they’re a modern giant. Given the success of the Dutch national team for what feels like centuries, that’s a traditional giant.

“Now we’re at that phase of the tournament and I feel like it’s a free hit. We’re going to go after it and do everything we can to find a way to get a win.”

Canada’s place in the knockout rounds has already rewritten the nation’s football history, but Marsch believes the significance extends far beyond results on the pitch.

The former RB Leipzig and Leeds United manager said the achievement could become a defining moment for football across Canada, inspiring a new generation of players and supporters.

“The timing of the goal means that the win is incredibly dramatic,” he said.”I think the effect that it will have in Canada and the inspiring of people will be immense.”

After the final whistle, Canada head coach Jesse Marsch gathered his players and delivered an emotional message: “You guys are Champions of Canada for the future kids in this country who are going to play this game. This sport has a massive future because of you. You should be so proud of yourselves… You are the champions of Canada.”

Marsch admitted he was disappointed the Round of 32 tie had to be played outside Canada after the co-hosts finished second in their group, but praised his players for quickly adapting to the challenge.

“We were disappointed to leave Canada because of the passion around the World Cup and our team,” he explained.

“But the players quickly refocused. They knew this was a massive opportunity and wanted to seize it.”

That focus eventually paid off as Canada patiently wore South Africa down before Eustáquio struck the decisive goal in the 92nd minute.

Marsch also believes his squad is growing stronger at the perfect time, pointing to the return of Alphonso Davies and the improving fitness of several key players.

“I did feel like we could get stronger as the tournament went on,” he said.

“Now that we have Alphonso and others getting closer to 100 per cent, we can give ourselves a chance against some big opponents.

“And that’s exactly what our focus is going to be for the next match.”
