Egypt reached the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 for the first time in their history after overcoming Australia 4-2 on penalties following a pulsating 1-1 draw that stretched into extra time in Dallas.
The Pharaohs, who had never won a World Cup knockout match before, finally ended that long wait after holding their nerve from the spot, with captain Mohamed Salah producing a nerveless Panenka before Hossam Abdelmaguid converted the decisive penalty.
Australia had threatened first when Cristian Volpato rattled the crossbar with a stunning long-range effort inside five minutes, while Jordan Bos was denied by a timely intervention from Rami Rabia as the Socceroos looked to seize early control.
Despite Australia’s bright start, it was Egypt who struck first in the 13th minute. Karim Hafez whipped an inviting cross into the area, where Emam Ashour ghosted in at the far post to guide a precise finish beyond Patrick Beach.
The goal settled Egypt, who dominated possession for long spells and looked the more composed side heading into the interval, even though Mohamed Salah was largely kept quiet by Australia’s defence.

Australia emerged with greater urgency after the restart and found their equaliser in unfortunate circumstances. Mohamed Hany inadvertently diverted a dangerous free kick delivery into his own net in the 55th minute, bringing the Socceroos back into the contest.
Both sides searched for a winner during the closing stages of normal time, but goalkeepers Patrick Beach and Oufa Shobeir delivered crucial saves. Beach produced a brilliant one handed stop to deny Rami Rabia’s powerful header before Harry Souttar threw himself in the way of Haisem Hassan’s late effort to force extra time.
The additional 30 minutes produced tension rather than clear cut chances. Salah blazed over from a promising position early in extra time, while Australia introduced veteran goalkeeper Mathew Ryan moments before the penalty shootout in the hope of gaining an advantage.
Instead, Egypt held their composure from 12 yards. Harry Souttar’s opening miss immediately handed Egypt the initiative before Mahmoud Saber, Rami Rabia and Salah all converted confidently. Australia responded through Jackson Irvine and Awer Mabil, but 18-year-old Lucas Herrington crashed his effort against the crossbar, leaving Abdelmaguid with the chance to seal victory.
The defender made no mistake, firing home the winning penalty to spark wild celebrations among the Egyptian players and supporters.
