Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi says he is enjoying life under new Besiktas head coach Vincenzo Italiano, revealing that the Italian manager has introduced a flexible tactical system that encourages every player to contribute at both ends of the pitch.
The Nigerian midfielder made the remarks as uncertainty continues to surround his future, with several clubs reportedly monitoring his situation ahead of the close of the summer transfer window.
Ndidi joined the Turkish giants from Leicester City last summer and quickly established himself as one of the club’s most influential players. However, Besiktas endured a disappointing 2025/26 campaign, finishing fourth in the Turkish Super Lig, a result that led to the departure of former head coach Sergen Yalcin.
Italiano was appointed to lead the club last month and has already begun implementing his ideas during pre season preparations in Slovakia, where Ndidi featured in Besiktas’ first warm up match on July 5.

Speaking to beIN Sports Turkiye, the 29-year-old explained that the new manager wants players to think beyond traditional positional responsibilities.
“In the game, it’s not just about being a number eight, because when we defend, I have to help in defence. When we attack, I also have to help the attack,” Ndidi said.
The midfielder added that Italiano has given his players the confidence to express themselves in attacking situations while maintaining their defensive duties.
“He made us understand that we have the freedom to go into the box. It is going well. With time, as I said before, we are going to adapt. With time, we are going to understand more of what he wants, and what he wants is very clear.”
Ndidi’s comments provide an early insight into Italiano’s philosophy, with the former Fiorentina and Bologna manager known for demanding high-intensity football and encouraging midfielders to influence both attacking and defensive phases of play.
While Ndidi appears focused on settling into the new regime, speculation over his future continues to gather pace.
The Super Eagles skipper has been linked with a number of clubs this summer, with reports suggesting interest from Premier League sides Manchester United and Hull City, as well as teams in the Saudi Pro League.
Besiktas are reportedly prepared to consider offers only if they recover the €8 million, they spent to sign the Nigerian from Leicester City last year.
Despite the transfer rumours, Ndidi remains under contract with the Istanbul club until 2028, and his importance to Italiano’s plans could make any move away this summer difficult.

Unless a suitable offer arrives before the transfer window closes, the Nigerian international is expected to remain a key figure as Besiktas look to mount a stronger challenge in the Turkish Super Lig and return to competing for major honours after last season’s disappointing finish.
